View Full Version : Funny sign placement ...

Nothing on tv worth watching today, so pack the camera in the tank-bag and off for a tootle. A bit cool but it is winter ... lol.
I have noticed a few signs in the area that for some stange reason give me a smile as to their placement. I know the logical reason as to why they are there in that position ... but I still wonder ...
From a 50 km/hr zone to a 100 km/hr zone. Note the closeness to the stop sign to the 100 km sign. Could a 100 km.hr be achieved and still stop at(before) the sign ??? Do any others see a funny side to it ... or is it just me.

yes it probably is just me ...

Anybody else got some other funny signs/placement out there ... ???

Yer, we have a 70 temporary sign just outside the 100 k limit here. It's been there for a 'bridge under repair' for about 2 years. Bridge isn't looking to be repaired any time soon so the stupid signage will be there for some time yet. The kids often say to me to speed up to 100 and back down to 70 for the 30 meters or so of the 100k limit! lol

The funniest sign I've seen though would have to be one of those 'Aged Persons' signs. Some tagger put 'Enr' on the front of it! LOL Made me laugh every time I drove past it..

....

When the 100kmh sign was moved from beside the golf course to its present postion, I just had to try. Yes it is possible to accelerate from 70 to 100 and still stop with a couple of meters to spare if I'm on the bike in 3rd gear all ready to go. In the cage it is not possible.

Edit: I just realized that's the Hazlett St stop, not the Sutherland St one. No chance of getting to 100 and still stop in time.

The notorious Normanby overbridge north of Hawera.Heading to NP you hit 100km sign only to find bridge sign of 65km(?)about 150mts passed 100km sign.Through Normanby is 70km.

I always snigger at the 95km/hr corner signs.

If 5km/hr is all the difference between staying on the road and crashing then there are some serious issues with the driver training.

Yes pretty funny... but I can see the logic to it. You're on a 50kph road then turning onto a 100kph road. How do you know the new speed limit is 100kph unless you have local knowledge or make a good guess? Of course you could put some more signs on the main road just on either side of the intersection, but you get the picture a lot tidier if you put them on the 50kph secondary road just before the junction.

.

I guess they are acknowledging that people travel faster than 100km and this corner warrants the warning...good on em I reckon.

Yeah I'm wearing my glasses now :sherlock:

One of the ones that confused me was out the back of where I live, towards the airport. I think perhaps at one time it was a 100kph; now it is 80kph. Nevertheless, as you cruise along at 80, there is (or was the last time I was there 6 months ago) a `recommended speed' sign for a corner... of 85kph :pinch:

The 95kph corner warnings are quite pointless, but I do generally like the corner ones as a rough (+20kph) guide.

weve got signs like that here too. its a 4 sided intersection controlled by 2x stop signs and joining on to a main rd which has right of way.

leading up to the first stop sign its 50k. less than 200 mtrs from the stop is a sign telling you its now 80k for the main rd. if you are going straight through towards the airport, it tells you its 50k on the other side of the intersection. for some reason, there always accidents at that spot... silly cagers not looking or obeying rules.

I agree. However the rules are pretty simple for this. The rated speed is purely to due with the number of G's you pull while cornering. They have to set the speed so that the G-force you experience stays below a certain level.

In this case, they probably didn't engineer the corner well enough to maintain the 100km/h rating.

For the tourist campervan drivers lol.
It's a recomended speed for all vehicles including heavy vehicles with trailers, although 40tonne rigs go 90km eh so kinda blows the max indicated safe speed out the window.

85kph signs let you know that the corner you can't see around is one you don't have to slow down for.

There is one just like this in Napier ... coming up to a main road, but there is actually a 50km sign, then less then 100m away a 100km sign, then a corner, then about 50m away a STOP ... we were in a car, but we didn't know the road very well ... we came up to the stop, and I'm freakin sure we did actually stop ... no cars coming for miles, so we pulled out ... dirty pig must have been 2-300m away (couldn't have even really seen whether or not we did stop, revenue grubbing B%$#^(d) pulled us over for not stopping at a stop sign ... wanker! $150 fine.

I had photo's on my phone as we were going to write in about it, but just recently deleted them as they were pissing me off every time I saw them!!

You really have to be alert driving around South Australia - they just love changing the speed limit every km or so: 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110 areas all interspersed with one another. If you're pulling out from a side road onto a highway or major through road, you have no idea what the speed limit is.

SH2 is 100kph and Meeanee Quay is 50kph (incidently, one of the higher 'success' fixed cameras is on this bit of road - because there are houses etc on one side only, drivers automatically assume it's 70 along there). The 100kph sign as you approach the intersection with 2 is surely more a warning that you are entering a high speed area? You are right about the Stop sign tho - it is heavily targetted and no doubt Officer Arsehole does very well with some dodgy ticketing calls. Be aware too, that when you turn right to go north, there is a slip lane...lots of drivers going straight through on the left get done for undertaking when the slip lane runs out. Because dickheads in the slip refuse to get up to speed before the lanes merge and Officer Arsehole hangs around there.

We knew Meanee Quay was 50km which we were doing, then we saw the 100km (it was going on dusk at the time) and sorta momentarily went to speed up, then saw STOP ... which we did. We pulled into the slip lane and sped up to 100km when flashing lights behind us pulled us over juyst out of the slip lane (good shoulders on that part of the road though ... suggests a pig ticketing haven!!) the copper said this was a part of the road prone to accidents, but oh well I guess you live and learn ay ... I have given up giving pigs a reason to make money off me .... unless I know there are none around!

It might have been for a split second, and only because I was concentrating on what the fuck was going on after the misleading signs and lack of visibility of road markings. Funniest of all... whilst he is taking my details, before he's even commited to giving me a ticket, a car having just pulled out of the airport goes flying past with no lights on. I pointed it out to him and he turned and looks for a moment, then turned back to me and said "I didn't see it". NO SHIT SHERLOCK!.

Spot on :first: This was quite possibly the one of the better and more realistic suggestions that make it though transit (or land transport or whatever they call themselves nowadays)

Cowboyz: listen to p.dath. When figuring out the g-forces its not all that fancy, there is a curved pipe stuck to the windscreen with an air bubble it (much like a spirit level) and there is degree markings on a backboard on the pipe. The driver goes around the corner at a constant speed and arc at 3 different speeds and from there the recommended/safe speed is found.

5kph is going to make sweet F-all difference but its like a polite reminder there is a corner there. :zzzz:

I wish you guys would stop talking about "recommended/safe" speeds when you are talking about ADVISORY MAXIMUM signs!!:girlfight:

There are NO "recommended" speeds, and "safe" speed depends on so many variables that there just isn't room on the poles to state them all!

All "speed limit" signs do is tell you what the "MAXIMUM" "LEGAL" speed for the road is - the safety aspect is about the minimum risk to the maximum people - not wether or not you can physically travel faster.

First one is a Speed LIMIT sign. Next two are Speed ADVISORY signs. From a previous thread on this subject, the Advisory signs double as LIMIT signs for some types of truck.
