With my sunday ride looking rather depressing
<img src=http://www.metvuw.co.nz/forecast/2009062306/rain-nzni-2009062306-120.gif></img>

I'm instead opting to spend it in the gargre. First ill empty out half of it, but after that intend on lubing up a few bits and pieces, fiddling here and there. Anybody else got things they need to do? Supply your own Brake, Radiator Fluids, Oils & filters.

I need to tighten my chain for the first time ever but have no idea how to do this nor what tools are required. Might someone be able to give me a hand tomorrow?

Slyer
27th June 2009, 18:26
Piss easy, right at the end of your swingarm is bolt sticking out of a thing hooked up to the axle.
Turn this clockwise with a 12mm? spanner to pull the wheel back thus tighten the chain. Make sure you do the same amount on both sides of the swingarm or you wheel won't be straight.
Tighten it till there is still a bit of play in the chain, not rigid.

You been lubing your chain as well? :bleh:

you don't have to loosen it much and knocking it with a spanner will help get everything loose on both sides

The manual has all sorts of dire warnings about this, but it must be easier than it makes out if it's only a 2 minute job.

Yeah, I have a can of spray on stuff that I use regularly. Seems to work ok.

How often does one need to do so? The advice that I've been given in the past is that a clean is only necessary if the chain becomes exceptionally dirty.

i remember the first time i tightened a chain... it feels like it was so long ago... with my all my extensive riding experience... it was like 2 months ago...

real question now,, you know how you told me taking the chain off to clean it and then just putting it back on with the same clip was unsafe? so do you just clean it while its on? or always buy a new clip?

first off, most (all) my roadbikes have had endless chains. It is possible to clean them without removing them ;)

secondly, all my dirtbikes have used recycled clips and NEVER have they had a problem. provided you don't mangle them and they aren't too worn, experience tends to "she'll be right mate". squigs is just fussy (but only in some areas)
