View Full Version : 955i Triumph cold start noise?

From time to time, and more especially on a very cold start the Sprint will make a loud droning noise which seems to be coming from the front of the engine. Occasionally this will not be immediate on starting but will start happening during the warm up period. Stopping the engine and restarting solves the problem.

I can visualise the likes of something not disengaging as the symptoms seem this way inclined. Anybody else encountered this, or solved it?

I'll be a while away from heading up there. I can do basic stuff myself, but get Kerry to do the tricky stuff like shims etc. Then of course he goes and fixes the basic stuff I've got wrong!:D

Will do but other commitments have taken over from bike worries this week, like eggs hatching, ewes lambing, minor surgery, job hunting..... :chase::doctor:

Good weather for a ride yesterday so off to the Sugar Juice Cafe in Opunake and then paid Kerry Wallis at Triple Fourensics a visit. Very impressive workshop and operation :niceone:

Kerry's educated opinion was that a burred (or similar) spline is causing the outer clutch drum to not release freely. The Sprint is due for a service so Kerry is booked to do that in the near future so all should be revealed.

Tell him to chuck a thethescope (sp) on the rocker box on the left hand side and have a listen to the flapper on the breather outlet !
My 955i Speed 3 used to have an unnearving noise (even when warm, but cold worse) at about 2.5-3000 rpm, where it would sit while the chokes on !

Before ya go spending toooo much money that is !

You could say a flap in a breather wouldn't sound like a drone, but i would've called it that !

Picked up the Sprint from Kerry at Triple Fourensics this morning. His original diagnosis proved to be correct in that the clutch spline was slightly distorted due to overtightening of bolt during past service (before my ownership), causing the mechanism to bind on cold starts. A lot of other minor faults found and fixed during the service too.

Very wet ride home from Opunake so easy does it but the difference to the Sprint's state of tune and general 'feel' was obvious by the end of the street. Roll on fine weather for a good ride to see hoe she really performs now :2thumbsup

Wasn't cold but it was fucken torrential in South Taranaki. Spool one peice kept the water out, and my gloves were overdue for a de-pong anyway

Kerry did a full service so a few $s, but well worth it by the feel of it.

Couple of samples from the CD supplied as part of the service :niceone:
Note high spots on spline in photo 3 which is preventing gear slipping off in photo 2.

Kerry is a master of his trade.
