From where I stand, the weather looks sweet as for Saturday. :sunny:

Been a while since my last outing at leisure. :2guns:

SICK of commuting. :ride:

Who: All SMCers welcome, learner (with open road k's under belt) riders absolutely welcome, you will not get left behind, Ego's not welcome.

Route: I'm thinking something simple and friendly in the winter/spring sun, haven't been up sh16 for a while anyway. Approx - http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=5+Alfred+Street,+Auckland+1010,+Auckland+(Un iversity+of+Auckland+Library)&daddr=Main+Rd+to:Waikoukou+Valley+Rd+to:Peak+Rd+to :wellsford+to:-36.573078,174.480057+to:Peak+Rd+to:Waikoukou+Valle y+Rd+to:5+Alfred+Street,+Auckland+1010,+Auckland+( University+of+Auckland+Library)&hl=en&geocode=FZ-wzf0dscRqCiHK_UxH4AiUUA%3BFbbrzv0dsjFnCg%3BFaxOz_0 dhMZmCg%3BFYwr0P0dktZmCg%3B%3B%3BFRIn0P0d8uBmCg%3B FcpRz_0d-cZmCg%3BFZ-wzf0dscRqCiHK_UxH4AiUUA&mra=dme&mrcr=1&mrsp=5&sz=11&via=1,2,3,5,6,7&sll=-36.634815,174.517136&sspn=0.236931,0.463486&ie=UTF8&ll=-36.617181,174.546661&spn=0.947929,1.853943&z=9

Time: Meet at uni outside gym 10am leaving 10:30am, lunch at Wellsford. I wont give an approximate return time, as this is the SMC clock.

Would do but I haven't done a hell of a lot of riding on the open road yet, wouldn't want to get left behind :D

Edit: Rob/Real_Wolf - Did you need anything for your bike? I've got a mate who just put his GSX250F into a ditch and ruined the front forks. Apparently he doesn't want it but it has a nice engine in it, so might see if I can buy it off him and pick it to pieces...

A match made in heaven  Sorry Andrew you're too fast.

Pootling on this ride is welcome, riding above your limit is not :sunny:

It's all about riding your own ride, so if you're comfortable on the open road and fine to ride your own pace then you're welcome to join us.

I'm keen for parts from the gsx250F.

Mostly things like the exhaust (maybe), the fairings (even slightly damaged the bottom left one I don't have), the right footpeg, the gear lever to sprocket linkage (mines wrong size), wing mirrors (maybe), bar ends (have none).

Definetely interested, just not sure about money. Would like to see it.

As for the 'pace', don't worry, we won't be gassing it that fast, if your not quite keeping up just fall back, we'll wait for you at every intersection, and you can't be slower than some other people

edit: oh, also, if the rob/real_wolf means that you think my name is Rob, its Michael

Bloody girlfriends ay. :2guns:

speeding ticket from the wellington roadtrip (yes, back in first semester before exams), food, dryclean suit for job interview next week, petrol, moar food, moar petrol, rebore for brown fury, $25 to get a transcript from uni for said job interview (at $10 per additional copy i think i'll be borrowing a scanner), insurance policies on two bikes and the list goes on, including a nearly dead cellphone that will need replacing shortly<_<

not to worry though! after the first week back from the break I'll have met (or missed) all my deadlines and have time to rebuild/restore brown fury and rebuild my motox bike forks:D

damn, the list of unread threads on my cp is pretty large too....

EDIT: oh yeah; and i've got a girlfriend too.... must find time to say hi at some point....

To clear it up, my last name is Wade, and half the people I know believe that its a better name to call me by.

As for the seat, the only reason I want it is cause mine doesn't quite sit securely, not sure if its actually the seat.

As for the indicators, mine blink, thats enough for now

Yeah, checked it out and the front sprocket came off the shaft and jammed against the swingarm and gearshift lever. Bit of a WTF moment, but the chain seems ok. No sign of the circlip, the shafts seem intact. Cracked the sprocket cover though...

How the faaaark did that happen? Those front sprockets are usually on DAMN tight. Does your bike not have tensioners at the end of the swingarm?

To be honest? Forgot to stow my helmet bag and it got picked up by the chain and wrapped itself around the sprocket. Not exactly a moment to be proud of.

The fabric wrapping itself around the sprocket obviously pinged the circlip off then pushed the sprocket off sideways.

(Is there a /facepalm smiley?)

Sweet, good ride guys hope everyone got home safe and sound.

Perfect weather and nice roads, bit bumpy though eh haha.

Tired sore and in bed, hadn't bargained on just 3 hours of sleep last night so I was absolutely happy for the short ride. That's why I buggered off and kept going, feeling a bit sleepy which ain't good.

Good to meet some new faces and good to see that everybody just enjoyed riding as a group for the first half, it's always a bit tough with bikes ranging from 250cc (a sick one too?) to 1300cc.

We had about 12 bikes in total, a good turnout for the first ride of the sunny times

Thanks for a lovely morning/afternoon ride.

It was the first time I've rode for such an extended period of time, but I'm definitely keen to do it again. Everything was awesome apart from the fact that the Hyo was a bit slow and it wasn't easy to catch up haha

Thanks Squiggles for setting the pace and jafa and the guy on the busa for waiting up LOL

Looking forward to more to come!

Bah!

My bike isnt sick fool, she runs fine. Just got her serviced.

She is just bloody slow thats all. Good ride.

only problem with sh16 is the leg from auckland to helensville

I just stick in 5th/6th and hold a steady 100. the only notable exceptions are the tight hairpin thing (currently entering at 70, exit at 80-90), a few blind crests that always scare me, and the twisties near the lookout. oh, and the 50k zones....

If you're gonna go up 16 you may as well make the extra effort and go to Mangawhai! That road has a good flow to it, even if it is only about 15-20km.

You rode well , you definitely held your speed through the corners a bit more when you were following me too.

If I'm thinking of going on a ride any weekends I just post up in here to see if anybody's keen, and as we saw yesterday a good 12 or so people turned up!

I agree entirely but that is kind of beside the point. De-tuned means deliberately reduced power output. Becoming out of tune or, to use the more technical expression, 'completely fucked' is what happens to a bike after 20 years of abuse and neglect.

Dare: I only had a brief look and don't know if there are different variants on the model? This link (http://www.motorbikes.be/en/Suzuki_GSF_250_Bandit_1992.aspx) shows it at 38, but I don't know if there are different model variants or anything...

Yes, the bandit is a 'detuned' version, and to be 'technically correct' mine is out of tune. But either way, its quite noticeable when I'm sitting behind Dare here, who has the exact same engine, and he's changing gear at about 10k and is accelerating faster than me no matter where I change.

Also, yes, the Across is meant to be a 45hp version, unless its above I think its 94, but theres a difference between what its meant to have and what it usually does, most of the 45hp suzuki's actually put out around 40 when you check.

ALso, squiggs, the dotted clutch cover is not a 100% thing, that was merely a model variant as opposed to a direct link to the hp

is he clutching it? does his bike+rider weigh less? are aerodynamics also coming into play?

I've led one of these rides entirely on an fxr150 - dont try to tell me that had more powar than the 250s behind me;)

tbh i don't remember what the bandit was like, but your across has a good bottom end for an IL4 250 - perhaps you'll be quicker on a twistier road where 40-80 acceleration is more important than 80 -120? it's a sacrifice i make riding a 400 vs a 600; sure my 100-200 time is comparitively shite, but speed through corners and the whole gearbox/power curve combo keep me faster in the 30-100 territory, which on an NZ road is where all the fun is to be had (without losing your licence too!)

(and whatever happened to riding your own ride?:( if katman saw this thread....)

I think the Across' missed that period. 1995 and onwards CBR250s were 40hp...

After having put up with the pace going up SH16 to Wellsford, it was agreed that those of us going back down SH16 would do whatever speeds we were comfortable at, and meet at Kaukop. 'Course, this wasn't even a dedicated learner ride anyway.

I don't *think* that any of us were trying to "keep up" with anyone else. But at the end of the day, we ain't their bloody mother.

ALso, squiggs, the dotted clutch cover is not a 100% thing, that was merely a model variant as opposed to a direct link to the hp

Yes, it was a model variant. However they changed the clutch covers at the same time that they restricted the power to 40hp. Ergo, unless a owner has changed their clutch cover (epic crash damage?) it is a pretty safe way of telling.

We should test this. PS. considering yours has done ~20k and mines done ~60k I'm pretty chuffed!

is he clutching it? does his bike+rider weigh less? are aerodynamics also coming into play?
I think maybe my gearing is different, he has fairing so is good for 180 I think, mine doesn't get much past 170 afaik (tested on a private track of course ;)) (Indicated)

I <3 the bandits rev range, 3rd between 10-16k and you never run out of fun :D This is why I want an SV650 over a ZX6r, corner awesomeness. Too bad they usually look a bit blah.

head down is so much faster than your knee man.

Also, my main power loss is from the last crash, before that it was fairly zippy and could keep up fine, either way I think the engine needs a bit of looking at.

Also, it should be good for 180, except my 6th gears ratio isn't strong enough. Back when the bike was revving out fine, I could reach 160 maybe 170 on downhill, topping out 6th gear. It has the power to go further but its gearing is such that it doesn't get much faster.

And yes, his changing at 10k is a rough estimate, and its just 'idling' away from lights sort of thing, I don't mean in a gassing it thing, but just revving mine out while he changes for a regular not-pushing it style ride and they are about equal.

If you have specific points on my riding then I always appreciate feedback, after all self evaluation is one of the hardest kinds.
What I don't appreciate is blanket statements and destructive criticism, especially about a percieved attitude from people I barely know.
If you actually have a problem with something I did/do then just tell me. If I have a specific area to improve then I will do my best to improve it. It's as simple as that.

For now I'll be reading books, and those articles you linked me (thanks btw).

Get fired up, get reading. Book yourself in for a RRRS course and something like the ART day, there is another @ Hampton Downs with HMCC in November (see Attachment).

Tbh I only joke about riding with Wade because I'm known him for ages and it's how I deal with his annoyingness :sweatdrop

I used to sail lazers years ago (and more recently windsurfing) and they were pretty hairy things at times (try jibing in 20kt+ winds when you weigh 55kg) so I know about racing your own race.

When I say improve I mean almost every corner I am trying to push inwards with my knee, push down with my inside hand, push down on the outside peg, get the best line of sight, never let off the throttle halfway through, be aware of the apex even if i dont use it, be aware of oil spills, escape routes and traffic etc etc. Until it all becomes second nature. I always check over my shoulder even when just changing lanes, I try to always indicate my intentions and thank people when they pull over when i'm lane splitting. You get the drift, I want to make sure that when some nutter finally does take me out there will be pretty much nothing I can kick myself about later. I also want to make sure that I never get that panic feeling when you turn into a corner and realise you've overcooked it, which is why I don't ride outside my limits on the road, no matter who or what im riding with. That's a lesson hard learned (two minis can testify).

Lulz @ the sudden defensiveness.

Why suicidal? I don't overtake around blind corners and I don't overtake without line of sight in the distance it will take to overtake, that caravan was on the iffy side but at no point did I feel 'if a car comes I'm screwed'.

Rather than thinking "is this passing maneuver safe if a car comes around the corner ahead", I always think "is this passing maneuver safe if a bike comes around the corner ahead, possibly giving their bike a good dose of the gogo juice.

Because it ain't always a slow, docile car oncoming.

Yeah, thought better of it since tbh I know I'm too impatient, I'm training myself to wait for overtake lanes & long long straights rather than gas it in the shorter ones. This is my last comment on this subject.

Driving around up north I always used to try visualize what would happen if a car came through a corner at a fair bit higher than the speed limit while I was overtaking. Similar idea with the bike.

One of the things you have to be aware of when driving outside the currently defined legal limits is not only the effect that the extra speed has on your reaction times and abilities, but also how it affects situations that others may have put themselves in. If you carry a heap more speed through a corner than the majority of road users, be prepared to encounter someone else doing what would usually be considered a 'safe' overtaking manoeuvre that has now become marginal. In short, be ready to get on the brakes and ditch it if you have to.

Real_Wolf
25th August 2009, 12:06
:P, its not just you, in comparison with most riders I see on the road your fairly tame. That being said, I personally would not do some of the manouvers you do simply because I see them as unsafe, I don't particularily care what you see them as.

But on that general subject, alot of the things I do I consider slightly crazy, as in overtaking/lane splitting points, yet over half the bikes I see on the road seem to do even worse things, like lane splitting between two moving lanes of traffic goign at about 70 or 80, one lane change and your stuffed, your in the blind spot of quite a few cars while lanesplitting too, not really that smart.

Or overtaking stupidly, round blind corners, etc. So many times I've looked at an overtake, say the caravan on that ride back from wellsford, gone "hmm, that seemed clear", gotten to the point where I'd be alongside and a car is just coming. Might still have ended up fine, might have gotten screwed, but always end up thinking "glad that I actually wait for a sizeable gap that I can definetely see"

Danae

holy shite so i just read through what is required to apply for a grant; AUSA is full of shit.

Squiggles, I need a detailed memberlist showing who's a student and who isn't, who's paid how much, a fucking 2009 budget and summary of all our capital/assets etc etc plus minutes from our last meeting

I then need to write a short essay bullshitting about how this reflects the theme of inclusion and diversity within the university student culture.

Then, provided it is all in by the deadline in october, they'll hold an interview to assess if the money will go to a good use.

If we can be fucked doing all that, they'll put money into our bank account. We'll need a bank account, and it'll need to be audited....

This jumping through hoops annoys me greatly - How many people are seriously keen considering it's in the middle of exams?

Oh, and I don't have time to do any of this; so it will proceed at SMC pace, miss the deadline, and no moneys for us anyway.

I'm not surprised and to be honest I would have been a bit shocked if it was anything else. All they want is to show the club has a proper fiscal structure, good record keeping and a solid idea of what to do with the money.

I'm not surprised and to be honest I would have been a bit shocked if it was anything else.

I'd be a bit shocked if it was a "sign here, receive money" type deal also, but what they have is imo way over the top.

mostly it is the crap about diversity and inclusion. that crap always annoys me because it somehow implies that we give a shit as to what colour/race/religion our members are, and that going to a sporting event or training course or buying sports uniforms etc is in my view, completely unrelated. (also comes back to the whole case of how we can't have true equality in society if certain groups are differentiated by law for preferential treatment - things like the suggested female quota for corporate boards does nothing to help women but improve the statistics; in the eyes of their male colleagues they're not there on merit but to fill a quota, even if that isn't the case! - read this or last week's debate column)

furthermore, in regards to jafas comments, there's a deadline and i'll be relying on dan (currently hospitalised iirc) and the infamous squiggles to supply info.

I had assumed (yes, bad idea but not always) that i'd be creating all these documents myself.

what I meant to say is weren't you voted in as the SMC safety officer? Shouldn't something such as this be directly within your jurisdiction (along with ital there being secretary sitting and taking your dictation).

I always have been so confused about ethnic diversity. Why is it that everyone was going "omg, look at America, they voted in a BLACK president, amazing". Who cares if he's black.....

Or another one I love, Maori seats, Maori rights, its like segregation. Lets make all the Maori's fit in here, and all the non-Maori fit in over there, so each has seperate rights and allowances.

Best of all is the 'scholorships' stuff, where you have Polynesian scholarships, Maori scholarships, Female scholarships, etc. Wheres the straight white male scholarships I ask you? No, should one of those exist it'd be racist/sexist.

I want to go into womenspace, or have a menspace (course we'd need a women, or a feminine man to clean it), kinda sexist for there to be such a thing at uni hmm?

Stephen has a copy of the minutes. I went to type them up after the last AGM and he had done it. Next AGM I will take the minutes. If club members wish, I will be happy to take minutes at chillers if there is a portion of the time where official club business is being discussed.

I vote that andrew still kicks himself in the head though...just for a "laff"

Does making duncan crack count as official club business? Cause that sorta thing is definetely worth being on the minutes

There's a womenspace?!

Bet it's retarded. And pink.

Menspace would look exactly like an old style bar with every beer ever on tap and motorsports playing all the time. Like that lotto ad where the mother-in-law comes over and the guy retreats into his man cave and gets a pie thrown at him and he catches it.

The pie being airbourne causes it to cool ever so slightly, becoming the perfect temperature for om nom-ing. The spinning action causes the cheese to spread out throughout the pie instead of being bunched up at one end. Perfect cheese distribution is attained.

problem with menspace is it requires dancing girls and scantily claid maids, negating the whole idea behind womenspace

Weather is supposed to be a bit cummy tomorrow.... might be for the best as I've got $70 to last me till thursday...

If the day looks good at about 10am tomorrow send me a txt so we can hopefully meet in westgate by 11am. Any of you other bugger who want a ride PM for my number, no dirty txts though cos my mum checks my messages (that is actually a joke, but would be kinda hot if she did. You cunts would love that shit.)

Anyway, back on track, if weather is good, send me a text by 10am to meet in westgate around 11am. Peace out.

A little rain never hurt.
But when it started pouring down today, I ignored my manly ego and hid in the VTNZ driveway (The Strand) for 15 minutes....
I think it was the smart thing to do.
