Bajaj – a name once synonymous with scooters – has decided their two-wheeled future lies with motorcycles. Production of scooters (the company is already down to just one machine) will cease ‘by the end of the fiscal year’.

Bajaj managing director Rajiv Bajaj said "We will exit the scooter market because we don't see much sense in it. If we are to be a motorcycle specialist, we cannot make scooters . One day, God willing, we will be the largest motorcycle company in the world. If we have to be a motorcycle specialist, we have to make sacrifice (in scooter segment).”

Why am I not surprised, with Honda coming into the Indian market big time with their 100cc and 150cc scooters. Honda I am sure has grown into the Indian market successfully and have establised thier brand name quite well. Kinetic are another strong contender in the market.

It will be sad though as Bajaj originally introduced the Vespa range of scooters in India. They were quite a sight, to get the scooter going sometimes I remember seeing people tilt it on one side to get the fuel to flow and then try kick starting it.
