Go test ride all the bikes you're considering and even some of the ones you aint...... you might be pleasantly suprised.

Also, don't that CBR...
Are you after a sport bike, a standardish bike like the zzr or another cruiser?

Go to the bike shops and have a look, have a look on trademe. See what takes you fancy in terms of looks and then go and ride it. It's not hard to go bike shopping for yourself, especially when you are the only one who truly knows what you like.

Really? The SV650 was girls version of the TL1000!

Who gives, the SV650 was one of the best bikes I've ever had. You should definitely stick to a middle of the range bike for a couple of years, to gain more confidence, learn to correct your riding style before jumping on the big bikes. Power isn't everything. Learning is, and I had a 650 for 8 years.

Depends on what you are looking for - have you checked out trademe or the bike trader on here?

Or you could just keep your perfectly adequate 250 until you are in a position to buy a bike without putting yourself [deeper?] into debt.

bike are one of the worst things to put on hp

lease one if you have to, but DO NOT put yourself in a situation where you're paying for something that's been written off, stolen, or suffered a mechanical disaster because finding the next one suddenly becomes much more difficult

considering this budget problem, maybe we should be considering things without high maintenance costs (think tyre cost vs tyre life for starters, then look at the insurance)

faired, naked or cruiser?

A trick for young playas... if you must have that new bike now...

Get a low interest VISA card and buy stuff, then pay it off.
After a few months your bank starts sending you letters offering you more credit. Once you get to a decent limit like $8000, then it is much much cheaper to use your credit card than to buy on HP. There are no HP administration costs, no dealer sales commissions and you have more freedom in what amounts to pay back. There might be an annual charge of $25-$50 though.

Of course you have to exercise self control, to use the credit card only for the bike (and emergency repairs etc).
The above solution may not be a good idea for some people.

Oh, and get full insurance so you don't have no bike +loan to repay (as motorbyclist has rightly pointed out).

I got an overdraft for mine, borrowed $3k and it reduces by $200 every fortnight. I've paid it off faster and it's been bugger all interest.

I did the same.

ASB gives out $2k interest free overdrafts if you've been a student for over a year.

faired, naked or cruiser?

ive been thinking either a 400-600cc sports like bike like a zzr 400 or similar, or a 600-800 cruiser like maybe a 750 virago or 800 intruder
i wouldnt say no to a naked sports bike but it would have to be, above all things comfortable, one of the main reasons i like cruisers

Considered a M50 or C50? Second hand they are going for "reasonable" prices and I personally like the look. But I do agree with other comments on here. Finance is sometimes a shitty thing to have around your neck, especially when you're younger. And consider the increased costs in tyres, rego, etc. as well.

Slyer
24th February 2010, 11:21
Sounds like you are wanting a sports touring bike like the ZZR but bigger, good choice.
I wouldn't get a cruiser now, you've got plenty of time to go slow later in life. ;)

24th February 2010, 20:11
i intend for my bike after this to be a harley or a triumph so i suppose it wouldnt be soo terrible to get a bigger zzr or something, are there any recomendations on sports tourers?

i have looked at the M50 and it does look good but i havnt seen any second hand

They're all over on Trade Me, mate. I have officially purchased one from a bloke by way of a signed sales agreement and me settling his debt with the finance company and paying him the balance of the sale price... and is supposed to collect the bike today after it has gone through a rego and wof renewal. Seller seems like a genuine nice bloke but one part of me can't help wondering if I may be scammed. Until the bike's finally rolled up in my driveway I better be on my toes.

Would an M50 be good for Auckland traffic splitting though?
