..and no not from my sphincter either, thank you very much....

I've decided to not tear my FS-1 fizzy to bits for parts for my YG-1 but decided to do it up instead as it's mostly complete.
(1970's Yamaha 50cc 2-stroke road-bike for those who may not know what one is)

Anyway, this bike had been outside for a while before I purchased it and didn't have a sparkplug in it. Result - dry seized of course.
So, took the head off, got lots of oil in there, left it for a while and then turn the engine over with the spanner on the flywheel, without much effort it turned over and managed to get the barrel and piston out.
Barrel looks good only a couple of tiny marks here and there. Piston looks good too but only issue is the rings are stuck in grooves.
What do you recommend the best way of unsticking them is?
Soak the piston in CRC?

Cheers

Soak, scrape, repeat. But more than once I've ended up having to smash them out. If you can get one end moving a bit you can flex and wiggle the end, very very patiently and free the ring up. But it's not an easy task

Cheers for that.
Rings are soon damn small, I'm concerned about breaking them. As you know, old Yamaha engine parts are getting hard to source.

Thanks :)

I would try warming it and cooling it in cycles too... different materials, diff expansion rates.

Yeah - no one liked that modern Coke eh!

Good idea, Paul. Okay,..might have to move the frozen mince over in the freezer. Sure the Missus won't mind !!

This is her here. Not hugely tidy yet but mostly complete. And it's a high pipe one too, the better looking of them.

I learnt to ride on one of these! (Many moons ago...)
I think you're going to have to resign yourself to breaking them out...
If the bore size is common then it is a simple matter for a machist to widen the grooves on a lathe to accomodate differnt rings.

Everything is possible. It just takes time and money...

When its done I'll get the mighty ac50 Maverick out and we can have a burn up to the chip shop after school...

Doesn't it have the UNFAIR advantage of 100% more engine capacity, Paul? ;)

No - thats a fair advantage, its handicaped by a fat rider and 1 less gear ;-)

It might be worth a call to Cliff Bond in chch, if you know the dimensions they can dig through their stock of rings to see if there's something that'll fit.

I got new ones for my 1956 Puch from them by matching up the size.

Bugger it !!!

2 broken rings !!

So gonna track down new piston and rings. Need a fresh engine if I'm going to drag off the 100-powered Maverick......

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions, all.

Did you NEARLY get one out? Its worse when you do cause you came so close LOL

I don't think you need a new piston - just some rings that fit or can be made to fit. Plenty of 'can do' madmen out there

yeah,..got the the tiny screwdriver under each other..moved it around the piston and PING !!!....two piece ring !!
Thought I could save the no.2 ring but nope, same. Poor things must have had a hard life. The top of the piston has had a bit of a hammering like someone put a socket extension on it to try and free it up in the bore. Also, the beginnings of a wee hole is in the centre but I don't think it'll make much difference to how it runs. Just have to run a cold plug in it.

If you'll wait a few years I'll have my Stinger going & then I'll show you what-for.

I found an overseas places (that a certain Wgtn FXR bucket racer buys his stuff from) can do a piston kit (the full-monty) for US$9.42 !!!
Worked it all out with freight and NZ conversion to $55 !!!
Goddamn cheap !!!

Now a chamber, a little porting,..a bigger carb.....a cutaway a bit on the disc... ;)

If you'll wait a few years I'll have my Stinger going & then I'll show you what-for.
However, I did consider trying to find a YL-1 engine to go in it........that would give your Stinger a bit of a hurry up !!

:whocares:Bring it!

. . . . [adds to what was previously a std resto project] water cooling, extra transfer ports, squish heads, . . . now, where to find some seriously vertical downdraft 28mm flaslides??

Thanks anyway, going to get whole new piston kit and refurbish it instead.

And looking forward to my retirement.....when Dave has his Stinger done !!!!!!!!!
