Women in Bakwu Municipality, Ghana, have been given permission to ride motorcycles… as long as they do not take men as pillions!
Riding of motorcycles was banned in the area by security services, who suspected motorcycles of being used to transport suspected criminals. But following complaints that women had to walk everywhere – including carrying sick relatives to hospital on their backs! – authorities have permitted women to ride once again.
If a woman “is found to have allowed a man to sit on her motorbike”, it will be seized and the woman arrested!
