Hi all. My poor 5hundy project is getting a new set of barrels (watercooled 2 stroke). I'd painted the bare castings with my fav PJ1 paint in a gunmetal grey which was an old Suzuki RM engine colour some years back. Just as a point of difference rather than just black. But they no longer bring in that colour. The can was a gagillion years old

So I've looked at VHT & they don't do a dark grey. Nothing I saw in Supercrap looked like I wanted to use. Never had much luck with Plasticote, but not tried it for years. hmm quick search shows only a cast grey colour, bit blah.

What other brands of Heatproof paint have a range of colours?

I've used the so called cast iron, and it comes out pretty much as cast ally - much better than alluminium, which is too silver.Dunno about anything darker in the grey line.

Yeah the barrels are cast ally so would be a bit of a waste painting them that colour. Maybe I should consider silver. Wonder how silly that would look. Does look better with a dark grey rather than all black. Can anyone take something with a chrome tank seriously anyway?

Heck the 'mercans polish these barrels on their million $ ATVs, but they look pretty dopey.

Maybe this will help, though I think best results are achieved after sandblasting. Still probably ok without?

My local paint guy made me up some gunmetal enamel with some sort of heat additive, used it on my old Kwakka turbo engine and it held out really well. Go to a paint specialist that knows his shit. They should be able to put it in a spraycan for ya if need be.

Ahh, so that is how you get heat proof paint? normal basecoat with an additive? Well that makes it a little easier.

We have a place around the corner that does that sort of thing & by coincidence one of me best mates just started working there on sabbatical from spraypainting. I didn't think of asking him lest he turn up his nose & sneer at me using rattle cans:shutup: & they do panel stuff anyway so didn't think would do for heat proof. Thanks Mr Inc. Guess I should have thought about it before.

Well after all that they suggested POR manifold paint. I'll have to dust off the old spraygun mind.

What about the paint they use on the Triumph Rocket3 engine mate...can you buy that from Triumph?

ahh well I have a $40 tin now, so I'll give it a go when my barrel shows up.
