I'm considering the same type of bike. As far as I can see the naked litre choices are:

Triumph Speed Triple
Yamaha FZ1
Honda Predator
Moto Guzzi Brutale
Kawasaki Z1000
Suzuki SV1000
KTM Superduke
Ducati Streetfighter

I've no opinions on any of them yet (apart from what they look like) but there are loads of reviews and group tests on the web. Like this one:

Missing a few notable bikes but it's an interesting read.

There is an outside choice just about to be released as well, the Z1000SX - naked bike rider position with full fairing.

You could probably add Guzzi Griso and XR1200 to WW's list and bracket monster with the fighter.

I think Cagiva do a 1000 Raptor too.

Ride them all and let your heart decide.
(Although I vote for LBD's duc.)

Depends on your budget and what you want exactly.

CB1000R (Predator) and FZ1 are like naked sportsbikes, in terms of how they deliver power.

Grunty v-twins like the Tuono and Superduke are still quick, but make their power differently.

Then, still around 1000cc, you have the KTM Supermoto and Ducati Hypermotard. Still naked, about a litre (ok, the Duc is a 1200) but more like big motards.

I'd take an SMC over an SMR.

I had an SM, I'd take the SM over the lot, but if I had to choose, it would be the SMR... the SMC was a bit too ring a ding. The 990 SMR tuned right etc, would wheelstand in 3rd gear, no clutching. Its like a motard on steroids

Had the FZ1 cos I couldn't afford a Z1000.
I actually felt better after I swapped bikes and went from the FZ1 to a Z1.......the Z1000 is no where near as sporty as the FZ1 is. But it does look better.
I would go for the FZ1 if you like the R6 top end thrill.....but otherwise what about an MT-01? if you want something different.

As for bang for buck, easy as pie bike - SV1000 / TL1000 is not bad
