From 1st July 2012, all riders (and drivers) visiting France will be required to carry a breathalyser kit. The rule applies to anyone visiting France, even if for a day trip or simply passing through.
Anyone found not carrying one will be fined EUR 11 (NZD 18). A single-use breathalyser (costing EUR 2 [NZD 3]) will satisfy the requirement. But if you use it to check your alcohol levels, then you don’t have one. So you can get fined. Which rather beats the point of having one! So if you’re going to France, carry two of them, just to be on the safe side.
On top of the above all bikers are being required to have a flourescent panel on their clothing of no less than 15x10cm, car drivers must carry a warning triangle and flourescent safety vest. UK motorists must display a GB plate and have headliights adjusted to the right.
Or, of course, you could bypass France and take a ferry to Spain to ride in a country where they still seem to like bikers!
