India’s Hero MotoCorp has engaged Erik Buell Racing to assist in the development of an indigenous high-end motorcycle. Buell’s designers and engineers will work alongside Hero’s own 300-member R&D team.

Hero produced 6.4 million motorcycles last year; mainly small-capacity machines. But with the economic boom in India continuing, the premium-brand market is an arena in which Hero want to compete, and Buell’s expertise in the high-performance motorcycle arena is seen as essential to achieve this aim.

"They are not arrogant at all. They are very curious and want to learn more," Erik Buell said Wednesday in a Journal Sentinel interview.

As part of the deal, Hero is also sponsoring Buell’s US racing team.
