The Smart Road Restraint System was demonstrated to the EU Parliament in Brussels. The system, which is a guardrail that features a second, lower rail with a new shock-absorbing mechanism, was demonstrated by sliding a dummy in full riding gear into the barrier.
A range of sensors are attached to the system, which are able to detect accidents following an impact and call emergency services. The sensors can also be connected to variable message signs to warn road users of hazards caused by – or may have caused – the accident.
The EU Parliament is debating the need for standardisation of road barriers across the EU that take into account the needs of vulnerable road users.
Euro MP Inés Ayala Sender said "Spain for instance has developed and implemented a standard for guardrails that takes vulnerable road users into account and improves road safety for everybody. Now it's time for a European standard performing alike."
