A biker on holiday in the Dominican Republic was left fearing for his life after being caught in a scam run by an armed gang.

Shaun Kynaston from Shrewsbury hired a motorbike from a hire company in Puerto Plata, leaving his passport as deposit. Kynaston and his female partner were then followed by armed locals from the hire company to a pub, where they used a spare set of keys to “steal” the bike before demanding £3,000 (around NZD 5,900) and seizing his passport.

The 35-year-old had to be sheltered at the home of the British Ambassador for three days, before being escorted through customs by two security guards to protect him from the gang.
