US sales of bikes and scooters are up 8% in the first three months of 2006 compared with the same period last year according to figures released by the Motorcycle Industry Council as increases in fuel costs hit Americans in their pockets.

A survey taken by the American Motorcyclist Association found 35% of members will be riding more due to the cost of filling up at the pumps.

The US Motorcycle Safety Foundation says 350,000 people will take its new-rider course this year (up 10%) and are struggling to find training slots for almost half of these.
