As from 1st July, European riders (and drivers) caught committing a traffic offence in Spain will have points added to their driving licence. The licence will operate just like similar versions which already exist in Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Luxembourg.

The new licence has 12 points which are reduced at different rates for varying offences. Speeding can carry up to six points, using a mobile whilst on the road carries three points, as does riding without a helmet.

One aspect of Spanish culture has been softened in comparison to the British version however - drink-driving does not carry an immediate ban in Spain. Instead, offenders caught with between 0.30mg -0.50mg of alcohol or other drugs during a breathalyser test, can face the loss of between four and six points.
