From "Franklin County News" July 4, 2006 page 25 sport section..

She's done it !

Katherine Prumm from the small Franklin Village of Bombay is the new women's world moto cross champion.

The 18 year -old teenage sensation made it to the top of the podium at the final round of the "Women's World Cup " at Uddevalla in Sweden, yesterday morning NZ time after a remarkable recovery from a broken hand suffered while competing in the states just a few weeks ago.

She finished second and First in the two race's yesterday morning to back up her win at the series opener and stamp her authority on the two round series.

Race one in Sweden saw Prumm having to come fifth place early on.

She pushed hard and moved up to third, putting in her best lap with two laps to go as she passed French rival Liva Lancelot and moved into second, finishing just behind German star Stephanie Laier.

Prumm then had to wait till both the men's MX1 and MX2 GP race's were completed to do her final race.

By then end of the first lap Prumm was in the third place, just behind her main rival's.

On lap three she made her move, passing Laier and then moving into the lead after pressuring Lancelot, and from here she consolidated her lead, finishing 10 seconds ahead of Laier.

Prumm had settled in well durning the practice and qualifing sessions the day before, quickly coming to grips with the track layout and posting the third fastest time in her practice sesion behing Lancelot and Laier.

Tied points on with Lancelot but leading the championship after the first round in Germany in eraly may, she was able to carry the prestigous red front number plate at Sweden's final round.

The injury not only weakened her grip on the bike but also prevented her from training throught her recovery period.

That was the toughest part of my season- actually overcoming my injury was a big effort and this win is something I have worked so hard for."Prumm told Kawasaki racing manger Mike Ramsey by telephone.

Back home in Bombay, Katherine's mum Helen was nursing brother Matthew, who broke his leg in a freak moto cross accident in Tokoroa on saturday.

Helen spoke to katherine on the phone shortly after the event and says she was understandably ecstatic.

She was really excited, it has been her dream for the past few years so to finally win it is amazing" says Helen.

There was not going to be much time for celebrations, as Prumm was booked to fly out from Sweden at 7am yesterday morning local time.

"They were going to meet up with all the Kawasaki taem members at the hotel, but they had to drive two and a half hours to get there so there won,t be much time for celebrating before she flies out" she says.

"We are so very proud of her, it's awesome, she has worked so hard for this.
