I'm curious.. While I was working security for Dame Te Ata's tangi I saw the usual variety of patched members turn up, but also saw a bunch of patches I've never seen or heard of before. Got me thinking, what gang's/MC's are out there that you know of?

Mongrel Mob (Nationwide) *
Black Power/Manga Kahu (Nationwide) *
Outcasts (Hamilton)
Outlaws (Napier)
Satans Slaves (Welly)
Hells Angels (Wanganui)
Highway 61 (Welly / Hawkes Bay)
Headhunters (Auckland)
Tribesmen (Auckland) *
Filthy Few (BOP) *
Magogs (New Plymouth)
Road Knights (South Island)
Mothers (Palmerston North)
45 MC (Auckland)

Only ones marked with an * were at the Tangi
Ones I saw at the tangi I didnt recognize were:
King Cobras
Huhu MC
Taupiri MC
Tribal Huk
United Bulldogs (Though I'm assuming this one was MMM related)
Anyone know anything about these ones? Or have others I didnt know of to add.

Surely not everyone in a gang rides a motorcycle.
Not everyone in a motorcycle club is a gang member.

I'd have thought many of the attendees turned up oin motorcycles coz that's the mode of transport they own and they just happen to be a part of peaceful motorcycle club that didn't attend the funeral in an official capacity.

There are loads of clubs like the Honda Owners Club, Auckland Motorcycle Club, Rusty Nuts MC etc that don't go around with patches and stuff but just meet from time to time for mutual advice, a beer or two and a Sunday run.

There's a pretty despicable "gang" with chapters all over the country. They have gang buildings and some walk around the streets fully armed, and looking for trouble! They have targeted other gangs in the past, so it must be some part of a "turf war" going on.
They drink massive amounts of booze and I hear that drugs also get "tested" by them.
There is a bike riding group among them, some of them aren't too bad I suppose...
Weird colour clothes this gang wears though. Blue?
And their gang patch is a bit ghey...

The Lost Breed are the remnants of the older gangs before the Maori gangs took over - a lot of The Lost Breed were Grim Reapers. The King Cobra's go back a long way, into the '60's,as they were one of the original gangs. We used to call them the North Shore Angels - I remember being gate crashed by them once at a huge party, the road was lined with cars and they ran up and down over roofs and bonnets....when they came in they knocked over the concrete block wall....walked in the door where I was standing, took out the ceiling light and the phone with one swing of a baseball bat.I was lucky not to get my face kicked in that night. They later became the nucleus of Highway 61...I don't know if this Island gang has anything to do with the original gang.

Hell's Angels have us beat bya couple hundred thousand or so. KB may have a few members in other countries but not whole books ( full of chapters?) in England, America, Mexico, Japan, China, Russia, most of Europe if not all....

So might aswell put World wide next to them in your original post Lias, though admitedly the ones here are nothing more than a shadow of the true members from the founding country.

I'd be interested to give that one a read.

"Girls in the gang" is a good read, like Kickaha said.

If you're interested in the Aussie perspective (some Kiwi stuff in it), give "The brotherhoods" by Arthur Veno a read.

'Under and alone" (USA) is a good read, for an overview of what a complete bunch of turds most of these people are.

Ralph 'sonny' Bargers autobiography is worth a read, if you take it with a large bucket of salt.

In response to media attention in the wake of 'the hollister riots' in the late 1940's, the AMA (American Motorcyclists Association), stated to the press that 99% of riders were decent, law abiding folk who had nothing to do with the debauchery and hooliganism that was being played up large in the press.

The hooligan element reacted by placing themselves in the 1% bracket, as 'outlaws'.

Some time in the 50's there were some nasty riots in America atributed to bikers, (it may have been at Daytona, not sure now). The main stream biker community came out and stated that the trouble makers that caused the riots were only 1% of the overall biker population. The loser bikie gangs liked the label and have adopted the 1% badge as a sign to all that they are the shit heads of this world and they are proud of it.

EDIT:
http://www.biker.co.nz/Reviews.asp?id=178

During their travels throughout the USA one of these gangs known as the Pissed off Bastards of Bloomington (POBOB) descended on the small outback town of Hollister in the State of California on 4 July 1947. Due to their unruly behaviour it wasn't long before they became embroiled with the local constabulary. After this a number of organizations and individuals were given credit as stating that "not all bikers were bad and in actual fact 99% were law abiding citizens and the other 1% were the troublemakers". Hence from that day forward the 1% badge of honour amongst thugs, rapists, drug dealers and gun runners who rode motorcycles and needed to be part of a gang for security and to feed off each other's greed was born. With this came the three-piece patch, which signifies their standing within our community and identifies them as being a 1% gang. This three-piece patch is vigorously defended and no other gangs or clubs wear the three-piece patch unless permitted to do so by the local OMCG. The same phenomena still exists today however they are more business orientated and are far more globally linked with each other and other organised crime syndicates than most law enforcement agencies give them credit for.

http://www.missoulian.com/specials/hellsangels/ha02.html

Two of the first such fraternities were the Pissed Off Bastards and the Booze Fighters, groups that established early the notoriety of the outlaw biker image. In 1947, at an American Motorcycle Association convention in the drowsy town of Hollister, Calif., the Pissed Off Bastards rode in drunk, wild and destructive, landing as if behind enemy lines with a belly full of TNT. The local sheriff later described the scene as "just one hell of a mess."

Quick to control the public relations' damage, the AMA denounced the Bastards, saying it was unfortunate that 1 percent of motorcyclists should ruin it for the law-abiding 99 percent. To this day, the 1 percent insignia remains a badge of honor, worn with pride by those who define themselves as not part of that milquetoast 99 percent majority who ride whining Hondas back and forth to the office.

Wasn't that written by the ex Mongrel Mob hitman that had to go into hiding overseas through police protection for exposing the underbelly of the culture?.

No, just looked it up as it seems like it would be interesting.

The guy was Bill Payne, and he died of liver failure last year; was an ex addict who turned his life around after recieving a jail sentence, and became a writer.

Below is from the Harold website...

"In the mid-1980s Payne was serving a four-year prison sentence for importing drugs. An addict, he had already served two previous jail terms. This time the shock of a lengthy sentence caused him to take stock of his life.

"I sat there and looked around and there seemed to be a sense of self-defeat from everybody," he told Herald reviewer Donna McIntyre in 1991. "Like, we're in jail now so life's over. I was determined it wasn't going to happen to me."

He gave up drugs and started writing.

He wrote Staunch after leaving prison in 1988, helped by an Arts Council Literary Fund grant. The book grew from a radio series. He used his contacts, a sort of criminal old-boys network, to get in touch with gang leaders and members.

He and photographer Peter Quinn toured the country talking to and photographing gangs ranging from skinheads to Mongrel Mob, Black Power and bikers."

Speaking of respect, did anyone see TV1 News on Monday night, 'live' from the tangi? Is it just me, or did it seem a tad tasteless to be standing on a marae, seemingly to pay respect to a much-loved woman, and reporting on rapes, murders and the like, while you could hear singing in the background?

agreed....guy i was with when i was in canada, was a member of an independant club that partied about 5 times a year with the angels and other nearby clubs. i never actually spoke to members of the other clubs, i did feel 100% safe with them. i knew if i got blind drunk and fell over, id just get stuck in a tent and left to it. lol.
i also know that almost every kind of drug was being taken and sold between members...had i have wanted to try anything, it would have been given to me. but never was it forced on me.
glenn, his brothers, and their old ladies and kids were there to check out bikes, catch up, drink and have a good time.

as a result, i have all the time in the world for the angels...but not the rest of them. theyve never done me no harm or given me a reason to be afraid or intimidated. and i also find that gang members are much more polite and friendly towards me at work than the little old ladies. lol.

Just becaue they can drink booze and talk about bike doesn't lessen who they are and what they do to make money.

Yeah its the public's choice to take recreational drugs but often people are introduced to meth through deceptive means such as lacing cannabis and even if people choose it of their own free will the dealers are the people supplying them.

The entry requirements for getting into gangs are a strong indication about what gangs are really all about.

At least they're not fucking pigs.

supply and demand. i work for a petrol station i still get looked at like im to blame for everyones bad days. my brother is a druggie, has been since he was about 14-15...thats about 12 years now. it would only have been offered when he first started...i dunno who from and dont care. thing is, its highly unlikely he had a gun held to his head and had it forced in to his lungs.

Back in the 70's my dad's workshop was directly in front of the FF pad. Now they had a mutual enemy as dad was forever getting ticketed for overloading etc. and the FF for obvious reasons. Dad would park his truck in front of their gate so the cops couldn't get in & they would in turn keep an eye on his property. They would sometimes borrow tools to work on their P.O.S. but were very good about returning everything. My mum did the office work & dreaded them coming into the office while she was there  and even told one of them to go and have a bath & put some clean clothes on! Actually told him to his face that he stunk! Hahaha!

Interesting - I have definatly noticed a lower profile over the last few years.Headhunters were a daily sight here in Auckland for many years, and now you hardly see a patch,Huntly was a Black Power town, but I've never seen a patch here, and the Mob are few and far between too.Although I was talking to one the other day....interesting the looks you get talking and laughing with one on the footpath.About time they learned they can get away with a lot more by keeping out of the limelight.

Got chased by a Grim Reaper years ago. He musta taken exception to something , dunno what.

Was a tad disconcerting given I was on a BSA Bantam, and he was on a Triumph 650.

Fortunately he was a piss poor rider, and I managed to lose him by dodging through the Uni grounds , through the Student Union, past the library and up the path by the clock tower, then through Albert park. That's a good dodge route if y'need it.

Found another good one t'other day, the big RSA building in Dominion Road , just by Balmoral Road. Turn into the street just before the RSA, going toward Balmoral road, left through the RSA car park, there's an alley at the back of the building, steel posts each end, room enough between them for a bike at speed, but they'll stop a car. Leads into the next street, by the time a car reversed back out , turned round, and did a right hand turn into Dominion Road and another right hander, bike should be far far away.

Not that such information is of any interest or relevance to anyone :innocent:

So might aswell put World wide next to them in your original post Lias, though admitedly the ones here are nothing more than a shadow of the true members from the founding country.

My younger brother used to hang around with a gang called Highway 61 (I think it was 61). He did all sorts of dodgey stuff, which he seemed to enjoy a lot. Him and his mates were pretty wild looking and lived well on the fringe of society, some of them were OK. He eventually got to spend half a lifetime in jail which was a shame really as he was the smart one at school. He got pissed and fell off his bike which ended his riding days and is now spending his time up north in a zimmer frame.

Enjoyed reading it. Can of top of my head think of a handful of NZ bikie gangs/clubs that are not mentioned in the beginning.

When I was trawling the net (as you do) I came across a NZ/OZ web page that I first thought was this one that has a very negative look at the patched biker. (Somebody here earlier also had a mentioning re that site...) I came to the conclusion that the site was a propaganda site against patched clubs as anything from warts to the tsunami was the patched members fault according to that site. And it was all backed up with "factual" info from the police...

The reality is that azzholes will be azzholes even if they do not have a patch. In many cases you find that they are less of a hassle as they are a gang member as that gives them people of same sort to hang out with and so is out of general publics view. Also in many cases there are strict rules re what they can and not do as a result of stong leadership. Then that you and I do not always agree with those rules is a different issue.

Personally I prefer sitting down having a beer or two with a bunch of the patched type of bikers then a bunch of "know it all" sunday riders with all the logo gear.

Everyone has an opinion, but are you just blurting out what the newsmedia has fed you or is it your own based on knowledge?

Here's what I know and I don't know too much! The Tribesmen originally got set up as an after thought from the Storm Trooper era. They originally set up in Otara....
The King Cobra's do not have MC's.....as far as I know but birthed from the Black Panthers in the day a while back. These Guys hung out at the Speedway.

There is a historic love/hate relationship with the Headhunters because in the days there was a junior faction to the Heads, "The Scalps" The scalps and the King Cobras often fought each other. I think a turning point of for the KC's was the murder of a Taxi Driver by a group of boys who ran away from owairaka Boys home. The King Cobras hung on K Road at a place called The Tea House. In those days it was interesting!! There was Drascos downtown Auckland (Black Power) again another junior faction of the Gang! Mongrel Mob Auckland were not on the scene yet, But the Storm Troopers were!(The cops destroyed the Stormies after the killing of a cop in Moerewa) Moving on time wise....The Mongrel Mob Auckland got set up and hung at the DB Tavern, The King Cobras had the......I forget the name but it was up on Wellesley street. The Black power had "Schooners".....Things started changing......The Skin Heads had the Bird Cage and the pub in Parnell???(I'll remember the name! By this time the junior factions of Gangs disappeared and they worked on Street Kids. The KC's met at Marist School hall and were pretty proactive in making things better for them selves.....Residue from the Blank Panthers....There's more!! ........ The point here is that there were never any motor bikes involved!! ......... The MC chapters were the senior members and they had workers sorting out all the WANNA BE'S!!

Currently The Lost Breed in Nelson has sold their pad and it's uncertain what’s going to happen next. They managed to stop attempted Gang Set ups like the Mongrel Mob and White Supremacist and I think Black Power. Currently there is a Gang family here...quite now just here but not enforcing! Won’t say who because it's privileged! The joke is that the Lost Breed have traded their bikes in for Wheel Chairs :-) Don’t take it personally!

Unfortunately what I see happening is that a lot of the wannabes from the 80's who were to dumb to do anything useful with their wildlife are now setting up little pockets of street gangs! You'll be interested to see that behind every little punk street gang is a 40+ year old failed alcohol drug fucked looser reliving their hopeless past and passing it down to their children or others!

Like someone told me today.......There must be mana in getting caught and not growing up!!

More to come!!..I left the scene clean!! The only comment from a stand over man...."What a fucking waste of time" you go figure!!
Peace up

Scumdog. Yes I did realise that. But whatever you do there is crap.

Take Away places. Some are soo crap and you will throw their offerings in the nearest bin.

Hookers. Some are so filled with drugs and are a waste of $150.

Employers. Some have no idea how to treat ppl and only think of lining their own pockets.

Builders. The stuff some of them do they should be shot for. Leaking houses anyone?

Bikes. Buy a chink bike as your first and the chance is that you be put off for rest of your life.

I could go on.

But it does not mean you will end doing it.

But to judge the biking based on some rotten apples is soo wrong. You ride because you want to, because what you do means something to you, because there is soo much brotherhood (and sisterhood) between bikers.

Riding a bike is not a pass time, a hobby. It is a life style. The ones that give up were never bikers in the first place.

I found I don't need other pople around me to be happy or to ride in groups etc. I know it works for some folks, good luck to you I say but when I see you coming I'll head in a different direction. Nothing personal - its just not my thing..

It covered all the major gangs and gang culture of the 70's and 80's - had some good photo's and stories about the 'life' from a guy who spent a whole lotta time with them. inside the gangs is the name of that book.Written by Bill Payne, publish 1991 by Reed Books.

Dunno, "1%" riders often just describe themselves as just people out of the norm - their recreational activities is drugs booze and women and copious amounts of them inside a ranked club structure. Hell's Angels have members who are non criminal. These "gangs" are clubs with a high percentage of members involved in criminal activities.

In the states people wander around in patched jackets all the time. It just comes down to what the patch(es) say, not the fact they have a patch.

I've been where there's Hells Angels, Devils Henchmen (went to one of their bike shows even), and Jokers and while not having much to do with them they were friendly enough and chatted and then kept to their beers amongst their own friends. Not too different from a jolly ol good rally situation.

Pity a common theme for a lot of clubs of the sort we are talking about here (at least in the States), are you have to be white, own an american bike, and not be a woman.

There was a very good program on TV2 a month or so ago, which replaced Police Ten 7 for some time, and it focused on gangs for two weeks. It's awful what some of these kids my age run around screaming at two o'clock in the morning, dude some of them even had a set of knives and other utensils that could/would be used to inflict fatal wounds.

They'll grow out of it, I hope.

Not too sure ! Was the first time i'd met most of them (funeral down here in manawatu) was a good ten or so of them rode down from taupiri, and as yet i haven't taken them up on their offer of going up there ! Was tempted to go hunting for them when i past through after buying the 1050 in auk, but being in a new relationship i was a bit skeptical about vanishing for 3 days lol

Wouldn't be surprised if they did get swallowed up by the tribesmen or the like, was a couple that came down for dicks funeral that were ex taupiri who had patched with the Tribesmen !

Don't know of the boot bar boys ? Are you meaning boots and braces in manawatu ? Think a few of them still going holding the fort and an offshoot, The decendants i think they're called who are having a shindig soon, or have i missed it lol (too bloody many to keep track of) !

Means the 1% of people who choose to live outside of societies rules

Depends on who you ask, others describe it as 1% of people who choose to live outside the norm of society.

It's in a direct relation to the American Motorcycle Association having made a comment once about 99% of motorcyclist are good law biding citizens.

Apparently the '1%' types left school a little early and saw/see HOG as some other kind of patched-up rival gang that could threaten their 'territory'.

As a Northern HOG member I have to say that I am DEAD against the big Chapter Rockers and I don’t have a problem with the wearers of them being hassled (so long as it doesn’t get nasty). There is a certain ‘etiquette’ to be observed and I am sick of these born-again-wanna-be-bikers swanning around like they have ‘been there done that’. It gets up my nose so I am not surprised that it irritates the patch wearing bikers that actually HAVE been there and done that!

To clarify, I am not supporting gang culture but I have been around long enough to know that there are just some things you don’t do. Personally, I don’t wear ANY patches or badges on my jacket and so don’t have any problems with patched MC/gang members. They know me, I’ve been riding in ‘the scene’ long enough to be known and to have earnt some grudging respect.

OK ( draws deep breath here, thinks calm thoughts)

What the fuck give ANYBODY the right to whinge about a group wearing an item on their jacket that they 'don't like the look of' even if it does not use ANY of the lettering/names as used by the whingers?

Especially when the 'whinging' consists of actual assaults because of a rocker on a jacket??

HOG ain't exactly interfering with THEIR (1% FUCKWITS) lifestyle, it's not like HOG is giving THEM a 'bad name' - and as it so happens there are a few 1%ers that are also HOG members.

And who made the rule you have to have 'been there done that' before you can swan around with a patch - born-again-wanna-be-biker or not???.

Sorry, I don't agree with your thoughts - and I don't agree with the HOG stance "Oooh, best we don't wear rockers 'cos the gangs don't like it'.
Fuck the gangs and what they like - I would love it if every single member of any bunch of bikers wore rockers, everybody.

According to him if you wanna have a patch and not offend the 1%rs then the simple rules are : pic/ emblem is fine and so is writing ABOVE the emblem but apparently not BELOW because that space is traditionally reserved for the actual chapter/ locality and therefore creates friction if you are seen to be challenging for turf.

Rocker - the curved patches above and below the main clubs emlem. For some clubs it will consist of the club name above and the place they are from or their particular club house is.

I have started wearing my clubs patch on my back, no rockers though. I've had some drunk homie ask me what I thought of him "buying out my gang and putting my patch on the dirt" so I just added better lettering to the patch and really other than that it's only been the uninformed saying it's "Black Powers" patch but most say looks nothing like anything BP or anyone else wheres (might also have to do with it being a hand painted piece of cloth).

Planning of getting small rockers for our shoulder patches, as to what they say I haven't come up with anything other than Ride Hard Ride Free, maybe Canterbury, and for guys that have some sort of position might have V. President or something.

I'm proud to say who my friends are, and glad we can share similar values. I'm my local area of town people in the pubs all recognize the patch and know us as good guys. Even had a drunk dude come up and hug me last Saturday lol

Yeah, they are all "gangs" or groups of people with a shared interests. But unfortunately gang has the connotation of being trouble. That baddest of the bad have guys who just like riding, the best of the best have trouble makers.

I don't get hassles for my back patch I've been wearing for the last 3 weeks (and had I got hassles I'd had taken it off), it isn't a traditional back patch rocker set up. Just a cut up piece of cloth, painted up with a cardboard stencil and CKMC hand painted in the middle of it. Our "club patch" is an 8cm diameter circle patch for the shoulder that nobody really notices, similar sort of patch to the Plains MC patch. lol If you see one of our patches, you are amongst friends anyway :P

Mongrel Mob (Nationwide) *
Black Power/Manga Kahu (Nationwide) *
Outcasts (Hamilton)
Outlaws (Napier)
Satans Slaves (Welly)
Hells Angels (Wanganui)
Highway 61 (Welly / Hawkes Bay)
Headhunters (Auckland)
Tribesmen (Auckland) *
Filthy Few (BOP) *
Magogs (New Plymouth)
Road Knights (South Island)
Mothers (Palmerston North)
45 MC (Auckland)

Only ones marked with an * were at the Tangi
Ones I saw at the tangi I didnt recognize were:
King Cobras
Huhu MC
Taupiri MC
Tribal Huk
United Bulldogs (Though I'm assuming this one was MMM related)
Anyone know anything about these ones? Or have others I didnt know of to add.

There are heaps of other, (by definition) gangs out there. By definition a gang is a group of people banded together for the purpose of closed social orientation. This would have to include the police, as New Zealand second largest gang, 2nd to the Mongrel Mob, they'll be happy to know that lol........
There are notorious family gangs, owh and the Christian Gangs lol....... Like those ones that come bashing on your doors every weekend to wake you up and tell you that God loves you.......... and all you want to do is hose them down with a flame thrower lol...

Throughout history, invading settlers and explorers have always laid claim to groups of resistance as gangs and have tried to extinguish them as a result. Ie gangs are also tribes????
It seems today the definition referred to as Gangs, is a reference to a group of people formed with the purpose of illegal activities, however the law enforcement agencies make no distinction really between them. It's clear that obviously all bikers, or riders of motorcycles are gang members, patched or not, as they continually harass and intimidate those patched or not with little or no conclusive purpose.
On my bike I have been pulled over at least 20 times in the last 6 months, and zero times in my car. I drive a car more often than my bike usually...... mmmm interesting.

Anyway, back to gangs, some are simply shit muppets scraping at the sluce under my shoe, however I have met alot of MC riders, and I have to concur, most of the groups I have met with have been civil one on one. I guess its an image thing....
Regardless, it doesn't really bother me, I like all bikers, even the do-gooder brigade lol.:Punk::Punk::Punk::Punk:

The OP missed out the NZ Police as one of the gangs.

You mean this one........... http://www.blueknights.org/

It is an international police motorcycle club.

Sadly a small minded person at the HQ thought it was a criminal gang and banned police in NZ from joining back in 2006 when we looked at setting up a chapter in NZ.

I laughed one day, The cop said to me, "you gangs members are all the same" lol, I luaghed at him and called him a bloody idiot, "take a look at my patch you muppet" He looked and said so what, so I said well I ain't forgivin your sins then and sending you straight to hell... smiling... he still wasn't figuring it out, so I slowed my speach down and said, I am a Christian motorcycle chaplain. I am a member of a Church Gang? I pointed out that perhaps he should refrain from generalized statements that are above his pay grade, as his comments were discriminatory under the Human Rights Act 1993 by religion....
We then talked a while and I prayed for him and his mate lol...... think they were touched by an angel different to they were used to dealing with lol.

To clarify, I don't hate police, all people I respect the same, however I will not tolerate in my presence anything below the operating standard of conduct required to me through my public right to decency and respect. I am thankful to all the police out there who do work very hard in policing in NZ. (Just not Traffic Lol)

haha, me Christian but far from perfect....... I am still quite rough around the edges and offend more Christians than nons........ I accept people the way they are, and if people ask me, I'll share otherwise I keep my ideals and revelations to myself.
I ride with Seed Of Abraham MC. www.soamc.co.nz

We have alot of non religious riders that hang out and ride with us. We simply ride for enjoyment and lifestyle. We are all fairly different and will ride with nearly anyone. We do some cool runs too.

There was the Harris Gang or Harris Brothers Gang a bunch of Skinheads from CHCH in the 90's. Not sure if they rode or not but being skinheads, probably not.
The Out Of It Chapter in Otahuhu in the 80's-90's. They had a pad next to the motorway down the road from a cop shop. They were a MC 'club'.

I remember when I was a kid I watched a TV interview (the reporter might have been that cock Brian Edwards) with a Storm Trooper complete with german helmet, swastika tats on his face and was a real dirty looking prick. He was trying to say the public opinion of the gang was all wrong and they were in fact quite nice guys. The reporter pointed out that he looked fearsome with tats helmet etc to which the ST replied 'Foo bro, you can't judge a cover by its book eh'.
I still get a laugh from that one.

never heard of 88s on the shore, know they have premises east and now west too.
as for treading on toes i highly doubt that's the case. it's a young girl they've been hassling. they seem to enjoy messing with people's minds and to have a big network to use including the blue filth.
without saying too much they have managed to infiltrate her life in some really strange ways.
what do they want from her? is it just some evil obsession, maybe a couple years of bad luck on her part or something more sinister?
