Thailand's government plans to ask motorists to pay for the privilege of driving in central Bangkok, in an effort to curb traffic congestion in the city.

The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy Planning has proposed the fee as part of an entire mass transit plan to be in place by 2009. Bangkok's traffic problem is a personal one for personnel in the transport office as their office is almost exactly in the centre of the city.

More than 10 million people live in Bangkok, and there are around 5.5 million vehicles, almost half of them motorbikes.

Perhaps someone should refer the Thai government to Ken Livingstone (Mayor of London - the one who exempted bikes from paying a charge to enter the central zone)?
