Hi, I'm Chris.
I have a race bike:nsr 250, which I had to rebuild recently. while doing so I noticed a broken reed petal. Have been quoted $480 for a set...so at the mo I am running standard reeds on performance cages and I am worried that they will stress and crack and break and enter the engine. Can anyone suggest an alternative to the 480 dollar reeds made by tyga? my bike is an mc18 model.

Thanks
Chris

Buy direct maybe?... It looks like two sets would be around NZ$245 + shipping.

Now this is ONLY a GUESS ...as I was looking on the net the other day any someone was selling a reed cage for a NSR, and I remark ,,hey that looks the same as a CR 250 Reed cage

IF it is ( I have a few lying around here ) THEN the Cr250 reeds can be bought separately part number ( 14111-KZ3-B11) price as of yesterday was 600 yen each

This may be a wild guess its just that the cages did look remarkably the same ..

I could measure the reeds for you if needed

Measure them up (maybe scan them on a flat bed scanner) and email some reed makers. That price sounds crazy - I bought a Boyesen Rad valve for my CR250 a few years back and that came with a set of carbon reeds as well for $170 all up. Try some dirt bike shops maybe - some will have good stocks of various reeds and could compare them. Also is there still an NSR forum on the net somewhere? They'd know alternatives or sources.

Reeds all tend to break (and the bits go through the engine) as they get older. They're pretty soft so I doubt they'd do any real damage.

Can you still get cranks for the NSR? Honda used some weird bearing to stop people rebuilding them.

A set of boysen 2 stage reeds for a two cylinder bike is usually under $100, An other brand are Hi Tech. $480 for 6 square inches of carbon fiber or fibreglass is a bit over the top

reed petal dimensions are

width 65mm height 47mm from the left hand edge the hole centres are 10.5 mm 32.5mm...53.5mm dia of holes ( 3 of ) is 3mm

the petal is split in the middle with each petal being 32mm wide ( 2 off~ )

sorry when I get some time and set up my scanner I will try to get a picture posted

Thanks for your trouble Stephen.

The petals that came off the cages had 2 splits and three petals per side. So, they are different (measurements differ too). I wonder if RS250 (honda) petals would fit? The engine utilises a lot of rs parts (crank, pistons, ignition) though I don't know its' history.

Thanks again

Chris

hey I have an RS125 (had an NSR MC18 before that) and yes RS125's have three petals per side and reeds are $12 for those and I think only $150 for a brand new HRC reed block with reeds, I never had reeds out of my NSR so not sure.
measurements are... 60mm wide, 45mm high (reed fastening screws stick out more) and inset about 46mm (the reed block itself)
reed measurements are 45mm long, 18mm wide each with a space of 1mm between each and a total width of 60mm for all three.
I am guessing these are similar to RS250's
so can you not get reeds from Honda anymore for NSR's?
failing this I sold my NSR with a full set of reeds, and can get contact details of new owner to you if you want
hope this helps
