Triumph’s first half year sales are up by more than a fifth. The Hinckley manufacturer sold 22 per cent more bikes in the six months to June compared to the same period last year.

The company also revealed it was aiming to increase sales by 25 per cent every year until 2008, raising production to 80,000 machines a year. It currently produces about 30,000 bikes a year.

Triumph's commercial director Tue Mantoni said the company was benefiting from a move by bikers away from traditional sports machines. "More and more bikers seem to be moving away from out-and-out sports bikes and are considering alternatives. We have launched the cafe racer-styled Thruxton 900 and the Rocket III power-cruiser in the past six months and promising sales of both seem to reflect this."
