First gear troubles

Sometimes when i go to put my xr250 into 1st from nuetral it wont go or you can see it sort of wants to cause the chain is moving? any ideas on what that is? also its smoking a little but if i change the oil and filter will it help? im going to do the oil and filter anyway but will it help?

Most likely the clutch needs adjusting - wind out the screw adjuster on the clutch lever mount until there is about 5mm of free play at the end of the lever.
Still no good? See what it's like after an oil change.
Speaking of which, don't use synthetic oil. If the rings are worn (more than likely for a '92), it will burn even more oil as synthetic slips past the rings easier than mineral.
