He sounds like the kind of guy that would see a complaint through and do his best to get the UOA authorities on to you guys... Better take him out before he squeals, SMC-Mob style!

I'm going to stand up and say that it iss getting excessive around the back there, and we will be rightfully kicked out if the peds have to make their way around us (this is happening particularly right outside the entrance to the locker area, keep clear of the doorway by a good metre guys)

There is undercover parking on the otherside of the parking area (by where you can come down from the science building) which is alot less used and alot more out of the way

that said, what a dick for his handling of his issues with it...

Don't know.

But he might be able to teach you some punctuation and grammar so I might be more inclined to read you above post - and maybe offer some relevant advice.

i dnt understand y there are 2 street magics a couple of scooters etc parked back there....and those pricks are taking up a dickload of space....i mean y not just pick up the street magic n stick it is a space that a bigger bike cudnt use?!?!?!

Nah, fuck 'em. If they complain, we'll just complain right back to them that if they remove parking spaces (and good, safe ones at that -- Alfred St), then why are they surprised when we start parking all over campus?

This is exactly what people said when they ripped out Alfred St. I'm sorry, but they're going to have to accommodate us.

@Bomma: `Exclusively for bigger/more expensive bikes' -- you cheeky little shit! I'll have you know I'm required to park there, in case I need to bump start the RS

a bit of diplomacy wouldnt go amiss, it is not our "right" to park there, and we get away with it because of the goodwill of those who work in the gym and the custodians, we should do our best not to get in the way or annoy others, for everyones sake.

Perhaps if we could go back to how the parking used to be back there, staying away from the door spot, and down alongside the gym at the carpark end more, we were alot more out of the way there. Security is better there too if you look at it from the pov that there is a rail there to lock it to. Also wont get drunks/dicks screwing with your bike when they come down from shads, or just people bumping them as they try to squeeze by.

Only 5 bikes parked over on the sci side when i left @ 12 today (including me), can fit at least 8-9 infront of the cars and more by the wall (where the cbr600 parks), walk that extra 20metres.

i refer you to the post by tom cornall (xerxesdaphat)....diplomacy can kiss my ass!! i haf no tolerance for pedestrians who point the finger at cyclists and bikers etc who use the pavement and other surrounding areas, but wont make the effort to walk that 20m down the road to the bloody pedestrian crossing....GET OFF THE FUCKING ROAD AND ILL GET OFF THE FUCKING FOOTPATH!!

sorry about my forwardness and steve this is by no means an attack at you mate, but just thinkin of the number of times ive had to swerve because some idiot jumps out onto the road without looking...and then some ol codger comes about thinkin he owns the footpath!! remember nish, you're foot traffic too once you're off the bike, do you use the underpass to cross symonds? :P

the issue here is not whose footpath it is (as pointed out in my first post, this particular person who vented could have done approached the situation in a far better manner). But does highlight the case that we must collectively show a wee bit more consideration in our parking back there, giving reasonable access to the doorway in particular.

I think the bikes parking nose-to-tail along the wall of the gym (opposite the lockers) are fine there. Low pedestrian area, don't take up very much room. And maybe one bike right outside the lockers, right in the corner is OK. But more than a few and we're pushing our luck.

Where exactly do you mean, Ste[ph|v]en?

That won't work. The unescaped pipe symbol will try to pass Step and Steh to the (non existent ) executable v]en. If it did work (trying to use | as logical OR) it would resolve to Stephen and Stepven, which is not what you want.

In the bash shell, Ste{ph,v}en will work.

Thanks for the diagram Squiggles... Helpful for those of us in exile on the 'other side' of Waterloo Quad to see what you're all talking about.

A little diplomacy would go along way - it strikes me that parking in the nooks and crannies around university is quasi-acceptable at best, and the quickest way to make it outlawed is to wear out our welcome - no matter what me may think about the rights and wrongs of the situation.

On the plus side - if numerous bikes scatted hither and yon all over campus does bring two-wheeled parking to the attention of those in their ivory towers in registry, at least we have a chance to meaningfully point out that the well-intentioned changes to bike parking round university are not working in their current form, and that changes are needed.

My 2cents...

(On a side note - scooters have crept in to the staff parking area at Law School...along with a lecturer's R1. If I ask *really* nicely...maybe they'll let me sneak my bike in there too)

Think there will be some construction for that area including the parking near shadows. Just be careful to check the ground aint full of nails or sharp objects. You can try parking inside the engineering parking.

Excellent but the current value of real-estate in Auckland must put the value of parking lots into unrealistic figures now a days, surely!

I guess "free" parking means the University picks up the bill and ultimately the Tax payer.

Even with the bike parking problem solved, the old guy will still just be the nutty old guy but there will be a time line fixed to him any way!

When he goes he will be replaced by another and another etc until the current nutter is actually your own age, now that gets scary! (lol) Cheers John.

PS: The bike thefts around Universities makes me bloody sick, actually any bike theft makes me sick!

Is that undercover and is really sneaky like where Nish parks?

I only need to workout places to park when I head up to Auckland Uni, otherwise it's just at AUT.

I sometime park at the Quad (where vesbar is), that plot of space next to Student Job Search, just by the entrance where it leads to to the GYM.

Otherwise, under the flight of stairs next to The Hub, where there's actually grounded bike anchors, but they're doing some upgrades at the moment so I can't great through.

It's real good, better than the crowded business faculty.

It is actually an AUT staff parking building which you need a swipe card but I have seen bikers (students) just riding pass the side of the barrier. Next to wilson carpark on st paul street

It's just calling for adequate parking in general -- certainly Alfred St would be the easiest/cheapest option I would assume. Ixion's the president of BRONZ (http://www.bronz.org.nz/), which is a biker's rights organisation who like to pick fights with figures of authority. Sounds right up your alley, Nish ^_^.

Anyway, as I mentioned in Sunday's meeting, he's looking for a few of us to tag along to the council. We don't need to do anything -- just stand there and look like the `voice of the people' ;)

Here's the link to the post with the letter attached: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1204896&postcount=19

Relevant quote from the letter:

BRONZ considers this situation entirely unsatisfactory, and calls upon you to immediately :
* Either restore motorcycle access and parking in Alfred St:
* Or, provide further dedicated parking in Symond’s St and Princes St. BRONZ suggests that to accommodate demand this should comprise the whole of both sides of Symond’s St and Princes St from Waterloo Quadrant to Wellesley St.

thats pretty awesome ixion (lee) good to see that you highlighted the importance of the biking community in multiple ways....

just wondering if we could make a case directly based on opening alfred st up for bike parking. my focus on alfred st is stemmed by the ease with which bikes can be stolen from symonds st and princes st....alfred st has also seemingly become a hot spot for cops who haunt the street, waiting for the unwary car to come driving down and slapping em with a fine. this makes it that much safer for bikes to be parked there....

Alfred St is undoubtedly the easiest option. I can't see them being too happy about losing Symonds St and Princes St to bikes. I don't see that the theft issue has much to do with parking, to be honest; that's a separate issue -- in free public parking, we shouldn't expect security to be a determining factor.

Alfred St is top of the list anyway.

i dunno about that Tom Cornall....by allocating free parking areas, the city would expect those spots to be used....what is the point in large areas of land being allocated to parking if nobody uses em?? city loses out as it is just wasted space and bikers would lose out because they have gained nothing (in terms of parking space)

every factor is relatively important and contributes to the decisions made....

safety from theft is just an important a factor as the gradient of the road or the quality of seal etc....they all play a major role in determining whether ill park there and whether my bike will be safe while parked there

again just my two rupees

EDIT: but yes you are right, the other two streets would not be viable areas to corner off as "bike only parking" areas....alfred st is most likely at the top of their list :niceone: good point that Tom Cornall, never thought of it that way

perhaps next time a scooter takes up a good sopt you should just pick it up and move it? i know i moved scooters out of my way when i used to park in the bike parking - idiots parked so far apart the parking gets full, but too close for me to fit. trust me they aren't heavy

oh, and i reckon a truck crawling down symonds st with 2 big guys loading scooters in it would be full and gone within 3 minutes.

By god if anyone moves my scooter, I will do exactly what you would do if someone fiddles round with your bike - f*#king give them a good kicking, I don't care who you are! I'll ask questions later. :ar15: :bash:

That said there are plenty of idiots out there that have no consideration. Don't worry, natural selection will get them soon...

Parking is controlled by an Auckland City Council committee , the Transport and Urban Linkages Committee.

Members of the public are entitled to (short) speaking rights at such committees. Once I have the response from the Council (the letter went by snail mail, and the response will come the same way , so the time is measured in geological terms), I will request speaking rights on behalf of BRONZ and the AUMSC. On such occassions it is important to pack the chamber with supporters. The latter may not address the committee but their presence sends a message . One person with a complaint is a crank. Half a dozen are a pressure group. Fifty is the Voice of the People.

I see no reason why we should not extend the request to include security railings along the roadside so riders can chain up their machines. After all it is we who are doing them a favour by helping solve their pollution problem.

In such matters it is always well to give one's opponent two choices - one that is unpalatable to them, and one that you actually want. Verb sap.

BTW BRONZ does not like to pick fights with figures of authority. If they will only do as they are told there is no need for fighting at all. Education is where we are at, but sometimes they resist being educated.

Today was not much better, perhaps worse at times...

Dan managed to park in the space surrounding the doorway which the others had left clear, and david and tom will loose mirrors if large people walk by...

for those that line the wall park with your sidestand to the wall and you leave a good foot extra space for people to walk down, david's bike was hanging well out into the path!

And once again, the area where my cx is parked was more 2/3rds empty... more secure and no rain at all over there! perhaps we're being a wee bit lazy in lining that wall

when i arrived this morning it was reasonably packed with not obstruction to foot traffic, but i did note that both Ehabs gsx250 and much moreso Nish's zx7r are very long and stick out quite far onto the footpath.

can you two, or atleast Nish (seeing as i didn't see a bike lock to the steel bar) park by the lockers or on more of an angle?

on a brighter note, the car that usually parks next to my spot had moved over a few feet, possibly to give me more room - that's right, a cager with a brain! (maybe, either that or they're REALLY bad at parking)

perhaps we need a sign: secure parking for valuable bikes at risk of theft - scooters should park elsewhere

all bikes are at risk of theft or other damage. if i rode a scooter, i would be just as gutted over any damage as i would i i rode a $20,000 harley. no matter what the ride, that bike is important to its owner, and the owner may well be dependant on that scoot for transport. i know if my bike is in the shop, im basically crippled as it is my sole form of transport. id be pretty much dead if it got stolen.

as for moving a bike, thats just not on. i bet youd be spitting tacks if someone moved yours, so why think its ok to touch someone elses. [ie, if you park with the sidestand in the road of foot traffic, someone takes offence and tips your bike up so its leaning on the wall]

do you guys have signed bike parking up there? if so, why not use it? cos youll get a wet seat? then get some overpants... they get wet, but your backside stays dry. or else stick a plastic bag over the seat, and take it off when you leave. i dont know how many of you are actually involved in this, but remember, it only takes one psycho dean to take offence and send a bike sideways. bikes are always in the minority [except at bike shops] and we will always be ruled against.

when you lot enter the work force, you may not have a choice where to park, whether you get to park under shelter or not. i dont have that choice [parking on the forecourt could get my bike hit, and i have seen little kids fucking around with it as well. pity it wasnt hot at the time.] so i simply park in the rain and wear a pair of leather overpants. only weather that sees me risking a ding from a car is hail or very very strong sidewinds.

i said "at risk of theft" - who in their right mind would steal a scooter? also, for some of us a replacement bike can be hard to find and we live a significant distance from the city (so MAJOR inconvenience) - can't really say the same for all the 50cc scooters out there

as for moving a bike, thats just not on. i bet youd be spitting tacks if someone moved yours, so why think its ok to touch someone elses. [ie, if you park with the sidestand in the road of foot traffic, someone takes offence and tips your bike up so its leaning on the wall]

that's why i park it where it won't affect anyone - notice i don't park up by that steel bar? it's cause i don't use a bike lock/cable/chain, so won't take space from those who do.... and that said, if my bike was moved a little bit, and not damaged, i would probably be ok with it provided there was a likely reaon to move it (again i only move scooters when the gap is just too small for my bike - if they don't want to be moved 30cm they should park closer together)

if people will steal a ratty pair of covers from a gn250, theyll steal a scooter. not so much to have it, just to be a pain in the ass and alleiviate their own boredom for 5 seconds. [kinda like the guys who graffiti mindless shit that no one can read, or like the woman that shoplifted a car air freshner from the warehouse... they found it down her knickers, of all places!]

and no, i didnt notice. kinda cos your there, and im here. lol. my vision aint that good, lol.

problem is that the guys stealing bikes are doing exactly that - stealing high value sportbikes, and don't seem to interested in the swathes of scooters (if they were we'd know). now that we at uni have hidden our bikes they've probably moved onto another part of auckland....

does that ducati 998 still park on symonds street? somebody should talk to him or leave a note or something... then again, if he's gone i think my bike is next on the theft list :( (i still occasionally park on symonds if i'm lazy/in a hurry), and once my steering lock is broken there's nothing to stop 'em - and i've already spent $500 on a new ignition back before uni started

It's not the theft, or getting a wet seat. The main problems, and the main reason why most people park there, is because A) when the sun's out, there's sweet fuck all parking available, and it's quite likely you'll have trouble finding room, and B) Symonds St is scary-dangerous to get in and out of. I see near misses every day, and pulling a U-turn across four lanes of rush-hour traffic is every so slightly nerve-wracking. What's worse is actually backing into the parking space, whilst taking up part of a lane.

all bikes are at risk of theft or other damage. if i rode a scooter, i would be just as gutted over any damage as i would i i rode a $20,000 harley. no matter what the ride, that bike is important to its owner, and the owner may well be dependant on that scoot for transport. i know if my bike is in the shop, im basically crippled as it is my sole form of transport. id be pretty much dead if it got stolen..

yea but some are at much MUCH greater risk than others of being stolen...also the cost or replacing a scooter is much less than that of replacing, oh i dont kno, an RSV1000 that was stolen a couple months back....but yes everonye is interested in protecting their belongings

as for moving a bike, thats just not on. i bet youd be spitting tacks if someone moved yours, so why think its ok to touch someone elses. [ie, if you park with the sidestand in the road of foot traffic, someone takes offence and tips your bike up so its leaning on the wall].

i agree with you, i got pissed off the other day coz someone had stuck a "free barbie" poster on my side view mirror, i was fuming and had planned on going to the barbie to express my views but later fond out that it was ehab...i fully dont condone moving or messing with random peoples bikes

do you guys have signed bike parking up there? if so, why not use it? cos youll get a wet seat? then get some overpants... they get wet, but your backside stays dry. or else stick a plastic bag over the seat, and take it off when you leave. i dont know how many of you are actually involved in this, but remember, it only takes one psycho dean to take offence and send a bike sideways. bikes are always in the minority [except at bike shops] and we will always be ruled against..

yes but as you may have read symonds st parking is usually packed, with scooters taking up a lot more space than they need...also bigger bikes like mine with a shitty turning circle find it near impossible to fit perfectly into a tight squeeze first time...for me my bikes safety is paramount....if i came back to my bike n found her on her side id be in tears but if i came back and found that she was gone id probably havea heart attack

when you lot enter the work force, you may not have a choice where to park, whether you get to park under shelter or not. i dont have that choice [parking on the forecourt could get my bike hit, and i have seen little kids fucking around with it as well. pity it wasnt hot at the time.] so i simply park in the rain and wear a pair of leather overpants. only weather that sees me risking a ding from a car is hail or very very strong sidewinds.

i am in the workforce, i have 4 different jobs and it isnt that hard to find a park in safe, sheltered areas.....most of my bosses really like my bike and will go out of their way to ensure that they allow me a safe place to park it.

I don't know if anybody ever got a photo of Symonds St when it's full, I remember somebody requested one for the council. I ought to take one some time (at least when the weather's cleaned up and the pansy-girly bikers have started riding again).

Dude, I may be biased because I've got an old bike, but I don't really give a shit how expensive your bike is. For some guy working $9.50 in BK with a $500 scooter, it's just as much of a financial hit as it is when your $x000 ZX7R gets nicked. In fact, at least your bike (and other more pricey bikes) is/are likely to be insured.

With the new law on third party insurance not sure would scooters need to also have at least third party insurance. This would probably be extra cost for poor students so they might be less scooters on the road. :Punk: I noticed several times a white CBR929 parking on Symond St. bike park. Wonder why it was not pinched by the scums. Probably they know what a HISS is.....good Honda....security system.

Bikes cost more than scooters - you do know that scooters aren't just 50cc's now don't yah? 50cc scoots range from $500-$2k, my 06 GT was $7k and the bigger the scoot the bigger the price. There is a v-twin Gillera which may be out of both yours and my range... Isn't that how it works with bikes as well? Pretty sure it is otherwise R1's would be readily available to everyone at a cheap price.

Do agree though that insurance should be compulsary for [B]all[B] motorised road users. Responsible road use.

Yeah putting together a plan for next season. They do go like sh#t off a shovel though, pop down to Mt Wellington Kart track out the back of the Tamaki campus on race day and check it out. There are other bikes racing there at the same time. I remember some dude got pasted going into a corner and he got taken by 2 fast scoots - he never lived it down in the pits. The flip side to any racing though is the faster you go the more it hurts. Las t Sunday a chap put his scoot down at pace and broke the tib & fib leg bones. That Pizza Hut Coke dude is right, globally it is rare to have a university in the CBD of a major city. The land value is too high and the 30,000-odd students add to congestion. UOA is a useless campus spread all over the city. Students have to cross dangerous roads and walk all over town sometimes just to get your next class. The buildings are a mixture of run down shit holes from the 60s to amazingly modern buildings like the new business school one. But overall, UOA is so geographically segregated that students also become segregated. You come in to classes and cruise off home after straight away. Other unis have a more centralised layout, interdepartmental interaction and much more campus life. AND, most importantly to this thread: many universities have decent student parking too!

the uni started in 1890 odd didn't it? and the city sort of... grew around it?

That Pizza Hut Coke dude is right, globally it is rare to have a university in the CBD of a major city. The land value is too high and the 30,000-odd students add to congestion. UOA is a useless campus spread all over the city. Students have to cross dangerous roads and walk all over town sometimes just to get your next class. yeah i suppose you're right there.... and rent in the city is higher than elsewhere too. perhaps we should pick up all the buildings and steal the aut campus in mt albert:msn-wink: EDIT, i mean unitec, not aut

i have developed a "bad" habit of riding from lecture to lecture if it's too far, and as you say, i know us engineers are largely insulated from the rest of uni. i had a high school friend (physics/philosphy conjoint) hanging with me in the engineering building 3rd floor study area and he asked how we all knew each other. seems for other faculties students don't get to stick together as much....

....

There are no AUT campuses in Mt Albert but I know there were talks of mergers between unis and polytechnics which has probably gone to custered now. Anyway agreed with Macstar it is unusual that UOA and perhaps VUW happen to be located in the CBD region whereas most uni's around the world are in the middle of no where.

Heheh, I call it `AIT' just to upset them :)

They're in an even worse position in many ways; at least we've got a few more open spaces kicking around -- they're in quite a crowded part of the city, footpath room only.

just back on topic, im gonna be writing an essay type letter in the little spare time that i have to the dean of science, outlining the reasons that have compelled us to park out the back by the lockers, so if anyone has anything they'd like to add or have me include in the letter pm me.

no abuse of the guy, nothing rude and please keep it constructive :niceone:

Seriously though, do we need to flick him a letter? He's not in charge of the parking. You reckon you could put the letter up on here before you send it? Probably a good idea to use utmost tact.

Personally I think somebody must've done something to piss him off so badly.

i was just thinking of our central, not-in-the-middle-of-nowhere, placement in the cbd, and would like to point out some advantages

like lots of jobs, especially for those doing engineering degrees who need to complete 800 hours work, which would be made more difficult if we had to move back up to auckland for the summer.

leave it for now, until they come by again. Lets just play nice back there and park where its possible....

Absolute lazyness rang a bell at 9-10am this morning, 5 bikes parked right outside the lockers and covering the right side of the doorway, while the park next to the gym back entrance and over by the sci centre had 1 (of 5 possible) and 3 (of 10 possible) respectively parked in them

Fine to get a couple in there, a couple means they're outta the way, 5 will be seen as a pain in the ass...

If i have the chance i will hang round there tomorrow morning to try and get it cleaned up a bit

the old guy has a point.
if the bikes parked where bommer was when the guy was talking to him are facing straight out then they do take up about 20cm of the walkways width for a few feet of its length. they need to be on a slant.

if i find my bike missing i will burnout infront of his aircon intake a few times.

Because the motorbikes down that walkway are in the way when it gets busy. I think he might find someone else to rant at too, and forget all about the bikes, if he hasn't already.

...I do agree though that the writing skills of many UOA students' is pretty shocking, (2 years of tutoring at the place). And I am not perfect either: Did I get the apostrophe in the right place?

Umm, No you didn't. The apostrophe shows belonging as it replaces the "of". As you already used the word "of" there is no requirement for the apostrophe. (Primary school level literacy). An apostrophe would be required if you had worded the sentence "I do agree though that many UOA students' writing skills are pretty shocking."

anyone keen on a sit-in down there?? Thought there would be a bunch of outraged bikers down there when i showed up but all i saw was the r1 and a scooter so it was a pity.....cant tow the bikes if we're sittin on em :)

^ There's two ways in solving this issue. I don't believe in passive resistance, you gotta get proactive and start being assertive.

One is to reason with him and reach a mutual agreement - doubt that will work unless you start getting some big shots from Uni

The other, starting a poster run around Uni with his picture on the front which informs students, lecturers, and motorcyclists of our plight and he is culprit behind all this shit.

Of course, the poster will be worded apporpiately but with conviction. The last thing we want is some defamation order, but then again it's used widely to scare people to keep their mouths shut.

I am backing whatever you decide to do. The more assertive/pro-active the approach is, the better!

yea i seriously doubt that he's keen to come to any mutually acceptable agreement....his major worry was "pedestrian inconvenience because bikes come in and out using that little passageway"....umm mate that is a fucking poor excuse, most peds dont mind takin one step sideways while we pass them at 5kph....how many peds j-walk across symonds st?? thats more than just an "inconvenience" to road-users and can cost lives....but you're not worried about that now are ya??

this would be a good idea if done properly (legally)...good way to raise awareness to the issues of bike safety and the lack of safe bike parking....this is a very gay time for this prick to be pulling this stunt....probably waited till exams came around to make his move :P

Staff entrance on princess st, i leave and enter thru there...

I very much doubt they'll be towing, towee's dont like to touch bikes with the huge chance of damage involved, plus they'd actually have to get to the bike first....

I'll see who i cant talk to at the uni about this, gotta say though that not much improvement was shown in parking from when the first encounter occured...

I suspect any discussion would most likely result in us being allowed to park by the sci center and next to gym but NOT along the wall or by the door to the lockers... thats a good compromise as, to be honest, we do block the path when we park along the wall and in the doorway area.

Anyhow, i shall see what i can find out tomorrow regarding this, brash actions wont get us anywhere right now. Will be a good chance to raise our problem of thieves on symonds and so forth :)
