Joey Dunlop's famous racing number - 3 - is set to live on in the shape of a new memorial in his ‘home’ town of Armoy, Co Antrim.

Councillor David McAllister said "I'm pleased we are now getting there and I welcome this planning application being lodged. We have concepts drawn up and I think it looks as if the memorial will take the shape of a figure 3 which was Joey's famous racing number."

Joey Dunlop died in 2000 after a racing accident in Estonia. A memorial garden was established soon afterwards in Ballymoney, where the 48-year-old star lived in recent years and owned a pub, but he grew up in the Armoy region.
