Right, so on the weekend after exams I think it'll be time for a good ol' fashioned SMC club ride. It'll make a great start to the holidays. Open to all riders capable of open road speeds:)

tentative RAIN DATE SUNDAY 13th JULY

weather looks good even if saturday looks like shite
the forecasters aren't really accurate past 3 days mind you, so we'll have to play it by ear
http://www.metservice.co.nz/default/index.php?alias=rainfcst_7daytas

WHY: to unwind, relax, and have a fun day
WHEN: end of exams - sunday the 13th of july, rain date weekend after
WHERE: CORO LOOP! a loop of the coromandel peninsula, anticlockwise, with a detour through twilight road to kaiauia there and if time allows, miranda backroads on the way back.
HOW: meet at uni gym at 9am, leaving the port caltex 10am at the latest. we will stop by BP botany on our way out. finish up back at uni about 5 or 6pm.

there will be open road riding, alot of corners:drool:, the inevitable roadworks, about 450km of gas/rubber burning action, and should take the group about 7 hours provided everyone keeps upright and we don't stop too often - let's try to do it in less that 6:)

<img src="http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/coroloop.JPG">

There will be the usual pre-ride inspection to hopefully prevent avoidable damage/accidents and helmet/gloves/jacket are obviously a must.

Nonsense, go hard or go home, pin the throttle and power slide it all the way into the parking space. Jump off your bike walk into shads and order a beer, then pick up the nearest girl you see plonk her on the back of the ginny and wheelie it all the way down the road 100m to your apartment lol

considering he lives not even 100m down symonds street, riding the ginny wouldn't be worth the petrol in starting/warming it!

lol! you call a bike that flips on it's side with no warning due to the slightest loss of traction stable?! a bike that'll stay upright with a locked front wheel for several metres, or keep going round a corner you've entered too fast in the wet on cold tyres despite "understeering" and without washing out is a stable bike! (seriously i'm not sure if it's the viffer or me or both, but either way it's a miracle that thing isn't written off yet)

take yer time banzai..remember motorcycle aint abt pushing yerself outside yer limits.

+1

learn to crawl before you walk and walk before you run - then you find your limit the safe way; too many "kids" get bikes/cars and try to hoon around without learning the basics first - then once they get into trouble they don't know what to do

as squiggles' sig says: "it's not how fast you were going, it's how fast you stopped"

so, how does a coro loop sound?

thinking we do it anticlockwise cause i've never done it that way round, and means no blind right handers with caravans half over the centreline along the coastal section, so it's easier/safer (and thus you can go faster:devil2:)

I'd go on a few rides before doing the coro, i wouldnt want to take a first timer round the whole loop

motorbyclist
18th May 2008, 16:39
lol i wouldn't even take a second, third or fourth timer round the whole loop if we want to all get back on time and without incident

it takes alot of stamina to keep it up over that distance, plus it's so long that even falling behind by 10kph can mean a big wait for the lead guys when they stop

:hitcher: I don't think the popularity was planned, but one could suggest a correlation between the superior intelligence and decision making skills of University students and the obvious decision to invest in a superior marque.

*Hahaha - big P/T - I like models from most manufacturers, it just so happens I want to try the veeeefour character of an RC45 derived engine with gear driven cams, comfy ergos (spot the risers), good fuel economy and excellent finish. Uglier than the new model, but a better engine IMHO*

I hear ya - I laughed inside my helmet like a maniacal loon the first time I properly cracked the throttle on my VTR1000 - all the while the hairs on the back of my neck stood up at the visceral awesomeness of the planet being spat out behind me, the front pawing the air, and the deranged bark of the Yoshis as the tacho raced towards the red line.

Damn I'll miss that hairy-chested brute with its massive übercarbs.

Back to the yellow thing - I think the VFR shall be known as the "Transcendental Banana"

(Was planning on putting our friend, the blue, flute playing Transcendental Lord Krishna somewhere on the bike - I gotta have SOME divine protection from marauding motorists)

I have negotiated to keep the Öhlins and my brand new Avon Storms from the VTR - unfortunately that all costs (tyres on and off, buy and swap OEM shock - the SMC crew is too busy with exams to call on, so WWH is doing it. Ouch at workshop costs :buggerd: )

Pick up once my settlement comes through and I sell stuff/work my arse off to make up the several hundred dollar shortfall.

*Anyone wanna buy stuff? A westie car perhaps? A BMX? Anything, please?? SMC vegetarian sausage sizzle to Phund Phurrballs Pholly?*

(c'mon Shingo - another unamused emoticon at my great punnyness!)

Anyhoo - gotta go, exams to study for and sit...

*Oh, and the good lady is threatening to sell it if I don't finish my LLB with these exams*

I'll buy the alto off ya. I want a new car that uses less gas than my current one..

That's no westie car! That's a Tauranga retirement village car!

(And it will start appreciating in value as gas prices climb more, so I'll keep it for now...;))

My lame-o-meter(tm) never hit the red zone whilst reading your post, so you're safe this time.

"...Phund Phurrballs Pholly..."Damn - I was trying soooo hard...too hard obviously...

As for loving the transcendantal banana, I'm pretty sure I will - I've got it for the long term, as it's slightly more sensible than the 'storm, but still has heaps of engine character plus reliability = cheaper to run and comfier too. :2thumbsup

I will sorely miss the big twin's stonking power delivery and sound though - will go in to WWH tomorrow and pay for having the Ohlins removed and fire up the red beast one last time before the towies take it away to the nasty insurance man :bye:(I still own the gas surely?!?!)

guess i'll just have to wear the pads back and see if she comes right cause i cbf rebuilding the brakes top and bottom and i think i've actually gotten all the bubbles out anyway so bleeding won't do too much unless there's a bit of crap blocking the return valve/passageway somehow, and then i would have to do it "backwards" forcing it up/out the line/valve rather than drawing it through.....

I've earned about $500 in airpoints in 5 months which means I can go into the Koru longe now and I get priority baggage!! It also means I can use those points towards a personal flight at some stage... Fiji, Samoa??

Air hosts are nothing special on AIR NZ and half are male anyway.

With an average work-related spend of $500 p/w on my credit card, I'm also getting some good reward points there too!! That will almost add to an international flight too by the end of the year.

So this ride is 5 days away so a show of hands how many people will be coming for the coro trip? I hope you all better be keeping your bikes in tip top condition for the ride.

So depending on the numbers then we will decide if there's gonna be 1 or 2 groups and the possible route/s. Some of us have new bikes VFR, VTR, CB and my hybrid single seater  so I'll most likely be taking it easy for the ride:Punk:.

Its gonna be a full on trip so be prepared for sore legs, hands or nuts :kick: unless you are a girl. We are gonna have alot of fun riding the twisties...so if your bike needs brake pads etc get it done and wear thermals to get yourself warm. Woohooo excited.

The guy who Dyno'd my bike and set up the fuel map for the PC III said that basically there is little freedom of mapping once you find the optimal fuel / air mixture i.e. the other maps won't make much difference to power and will likely result in rev ranges of lean or rich mixtures.

OK all -

My original plan was to pick up the VFR on Saturday. The weather looks dirty that day. Sunday looks much better :sunny:

I have found cheap bus fares which will get me to Katikati on Sunday shortly after 3. If you fellas are heading back to Auckers, I should be able to tag along for the latter part of the ride. If I miss you all, that's OK too, as I don't want to hold anyone up, and I'm sure I'll enjoy the trip just fine on teh beast of newness! :scooter: :devil2:

heheh we'll see how my brakes are doing.... might have to have an emergency brake rebuild sometime this week

they aren't releasing properly - means hot brakes and i can feel it's loading up the chassis/suspension when on the motorway... slowing me down and won't be good for corners:(

sticky piston i'm thinking... and/or rooted seals

Bugger, I'd look for whole new (or second hand callipers), the rebuild kits for the RF were about $250-300 an end. I remember on TM at the time there callipers from wrecked semi-new bikes for the same price. Jost bolt on and hook up the the brake lines.

good idea

undo the pins that the pads slide on

take your calipers off

clean the pistons, sand the pins lightly(to clean them not more!)
put everythign back in the same places, making sure that the pads contact the same part of the disk that they were beforehand.

Is non-openroad experience for 1300km good enough??

Not really... At least get some open road riding done by yourself or with a couple of mates before the group stuff. Group riding requires a fair bit of concentration and a learner can be easily distracted, not to mention trying to follow other people's lines and speeds into corners which can lead to disaster.

Go for a pootle up SH16 or even just out Riverhead way by yourself or with a couple of guys just to get some more experience on 100kph road which is very different to riding around town or on the motorway.

Squiggles
2nd July 2008, 22:19
I only say so because its always good to get some experience riding your own ride, not concentrating on everyone elses (as your post on the rrrs thread suggests you were doing)

I'm going for a blast on saturday and tomorrow i'll be doing the henderson gp on the way to andrews. If you want you can come with me on saturday, I'm thinking sh16 to woodcocks and then to wellsford, nice and easy. I ride pretty slow bud, advice if you do come. Don't follow my lines, don't look at me when going through a corner. Brake early, slow in fast out. I'm not gonna leave you behind haha so don't rush or hurry. Think a couple corners ahead and you'll be right. In fact i think it will do us some good getting some solo hours under oue belts, especially me. I just need to ride :niceone:

Good advice Dushy, just like the guy at RRRS said, sure meet up with mates and have lunch etc but when you're actually riding don't ride as a "group", just ride as you would usually by yourself. Even EJ told me this week when we did SH16 that he just learnt to look around the corners from me, and he's been riding for a little while at least! I was really trying to put into practice what the course taught us.

Have you got a link to your camera, what do they cost?

The weather is supposed to be shit this weekend, but I think I will do the loop anyway - I desperately need some decent ride time.

it's an oregon scientific ATC 2000 (commonly called 'ATC 2K')

got it for $250 bucks plus another $30 for a 2gb SD card, running on rechargable AA batteries i had lying around

i'll def be keen to find a new spot to stick the camera somewhere on the side of the bike, or maybe on the tank again but higher up

it was an "Oregon Scientific ATC 2000"

i got it off trademe new for $250.

waterproof to 3 metres, seen video of one falling from a model rocket from 1900 feet and the video didn't even cut when it hit the ground, and i met a guy at the ride with one who had put it on his fairings and given it a bit of road rash - still worked fine

takes SD memory cards up to 2GB, at max quality a 2GB card (about $30) will last an hour, two alkaline AA batteries seem to last around 2 hours. usb to get it on your computer, and functions as a mass storage device, so no drivers or special software included/needed.
No cables needed either. Just turn her on and go.

comes with mounts for various applications, but I found a combination of "furry" velcro on the camera and 3M Dual Lock (both self adhesive) is the best way to stick it to your helmet - good to atleast 140kph on helmet

the video quality is what you would expect for $250. max settings are 640 by 480 at 30 frames per second. sound it ok, especially considering the mic is inside the body, but wind noise over 80kph is a serious problem (might actually be my bike's cam gears, but doubt it). i'm yet to make a wind sock to see if i can fix it.

note that resolution is much higher than youtube video, so for that purpose this camera can be run at much lower settings.

i found attaching to the tank was ok, but it needed duct tape to stabilise it or it flops around too much. on the helmet it is stable, isn't too heavy, and doesn't create much drag, but it take a bit to get the aim right as there is no live feed, so you have to put it on, sit on bike, take it off, load onto computer, adjust and repeat - i think i'll mark the mount points on my helmet lol.

so all that considered it was much cheaper and easier than buying a $400 bullet cam and hooking that up to a $1200 video recorder, and i don't have to worry about anything breaking on impact, especially when i try it on the dirt bike, but isn't exactly high def.

will try to post raw video sample asap
