View Full Version : Ride n BBQ n beers Sat 2 Aug

Hey crew

I haven't managed to socialise or ride with many of you guys n girls for a while. My thinking is: it would be incredibly unlucky to get a 4th or 5th weekend in a row of shit weather so I am banking that the coming weekend will be all good????!

Anyway the plan: head out for a ride of Coro loop portions or maybe slightly shorter on the Sat and I'll treat ya'll to some sausages and a few brewskies afterwards at my place in Mt Eden. Yes, I said my treat - so no excuses.

Mt Eden is pretty central so if you do go over the 2-3 drink threshold it shouldn't be too hard to taxi or bus somewhere, or find a piece of floor here (worse-case).

Whether this event runs in conjunction with the Fri chiller or replaces it for this week I don't really care - but I won't be able to make Fri night sorry.

Sweetas - let me know if you're keen so I know how many beers and sausages I'll need!! Errr, actually maybe I should put a 4 doz limit on that!

Any other suggestions are welcome...

Ewen - gutair?
Kim - girls?
Steve / Andrew - Pocketrocket entertainment?
Banzai - GN burnouts?

Motorb - If you want to ride pillion bitch with me that should be fine:pinch:

Weather permitting (i.e. check the thread on Sat morning or txt me):

Meet at AKL UNI gym 9am Symonds St
Departing 9.30am sharp - won't wait for stragglers, your only chance will be catching us at Kopu.
We will probably split into two groups - Slow and less slow.

Expect to be at Kopu Mobil around 11am for a regroup.
Lunch could be at the infamous Coroglen Pub or whereever the group wants it to be.
At lunch we assess how far along the loop we are and whether we should do the whole thing or the half one.

Expect to be back in Akl between 4-5pm for the BBQ!

We will hit kaiaua on the way down and State highways coming home.

Sweet. All the usual stuff i.e. a good night's sleep, warm clothes, good safe bike etc etc.

(However if it's really fine sunny day I might make excuse and come for ride :bleh:)

If I'm coming for ride I prefer somewhere shorter than Coro and beginner friendly ;)

As I've seen few accidents recently I'm not gonna do GN burnout!!! (yea, sorry I'm boring person)

Can't spend any money at the moment. Too much debt!!!

*Don't tell me your bloody life story! A simple yes or no.
*You have no money for the ride or no money to commute to Mt Eden from your house in Akl to get free beer and food? Though I think those who don't come riding first should BYO to the BBQ.
*Anyway, you're probably right about the ride part, maybe Squiggles can run a learner friendly cruise on the same day...?

Hi Banzai just come for the ride go slow and at your own pace. Should not be a problem...you just need to be confident. How much would a GN repair cost compared to a CBR250? Be confident in the ride....it aint a race..

Nomis this ride is open to anyone who wanna ride provided you aint a bloody hoon or lunatic on the road that would endanger other riders. So come cos I wanna see that super 250 hornet of yours..

Macstar; yeah will be keen to test my bike on coro loop again after the suspension setup. I got my pillion seat too so if you can hook me up with a lady friend then that would make my day....:2thumbsup. you must be getting good corporates rates for ya supplies eh? nice one bro....hope the weather holds..

Yeah, too far out still for an accurate forecast but here's a reliable source:

Situation: A deep low, with areas of storm to gale force winds, slowly tracks southwards along the west of the North Island today, then stalls over central New Zealand Thursday and moves further southward from Friday. Disturbed westerlies follow this low through to Sunday.

Outlook:Friday:Westerly 25 knots. Scattered showers. Saturday: Northwest 25 knots rising northerly 35 knots morning. Period of rain. Sunday: Northwest 30 knots easing 20 knots evening. Occasional showers.

no gear and all of 2 months experience - no go

I don't mean to be negative, but realistically speaking a newbie on the coro is just asking for trouble - even more so in this weather as there's alot of mud washed onto the roads and a fair few corners have water running across them.

scenic drive/huia/piha/bethells is a good one

personally i prefer a waitakere loop to the coro loop simply because it's closer to auckland and you don't waste so much money/time... and i practically live on it:p

coro loop is still a friggen awesome ride, but takes a lot of effort and if anything (like the weather) goes wrong it's a long ride home, whereas the waitaks are 20-30 minutes from the CBD

Ok, howbout we meet up at that time anyway and if weather is bad I'll go ride somewhere easier and shorter than coro.

Anyone who's not confident enough to go Coro can tag me along

All three of you... the coro loop in the winter is not suitable for any level of noobiness :angry2:

Especially R6 noobs that haven't ridden for 3 months!

I don't mean to be negative, but realistically speaking a newbie on the coro is just asking for trouble - even more so in this weather as there's alot of mud washed onto the roads and a fair few corners have water running across them.i don't think i've ever done a ride where no-one binned except the once back with raj and isaac during the summer, and even that had some hairy moments

Hairy is my middle name...

But seriously come on guys?~

The Coro loop is fine, it's a fantastic piece of road and as long as you ride within your own personal limits it's sweetas. I will admit that if you are a noob that a 7-8 hr day of riding can be exhausting.

Anyway, to be safe - I will agree that if the weather is crap and you're a noob, it may be better to save the loop for drier days. And possibly get some experience on the Kaiaua road first?

Really!? But you ride longer than me right??? I try to use motorway as much as possible for commuting coz it's faster, no lights and less bends lol

Ok let's try Scenic Drive this sat then!!!

If you're doing scenic drive this sat. i'm keen, just knock on my door or give me a text.

And all this rubbish about Coro loop being an absolute death ride... i've never done a coro loop where someone has binned.

Except for the coastal bit at the beginning which is quite slippery with really tight corners, the loop's not actually all that bad. It's just quite long and exhausted which really hits you in the wet.

I say a noob could do it, but whether or not they'd actually enjoy it or not is a different question.

my advise is to stay home, get into your gorilla costume, get out the drum kit and play to genesis....go phil collins whooop WHOOOOOOOP

eh? me? noob? might I remind you of the time you were probably following me, and almost binned, coz you didn't expect the corner to tighten as much as it did?

Anyway, I like drifting the bike, locking the rear under brakes etc... With the mud that will be on the coro loop, I know the sportattacks are not going to handle it too well, me thinks I will tootle down to quaz, and go hassle him over gear.

i might add that a few ex-newbies that i've done the coro with (their first time) all mentioned they're glad they waited a few months before attempting it.

it's not a killer if you ride like a nana, but realisically speaking who is going to do that? i know i wont. tried that twice now and both times ended up with a fucking crashed bike

Ha ha. I might just f^&&kn do the ride anyway as I've had a hell of a week and need some fresh air - but will let you guys know tomorrow morning officially on this thread.

Unfortunately my US-ordered Radar dectector parts haven't arrived yet, so will have to watch it on the Motorway and Hauraki Plains...

As for the BBQ - if the weather is shit, this will be postponed.

Will change the reason for tomorrow's celebration to:

Managed to go 7 years without losing my license!!

As previously mentioned, will let you guys know tomorrow if the BBQ is still on.

Scenic drive (to Piha Beach, may aswell stop at the beach..) from Titirangi is 23.5 km. It's quite short but it's a pretty good stretch of road, quite high speed at some points but more then enough tight twisties to keep people interested.

It's a really good one for newer riders aswell.. (And I live on Scenic Drive) so if you're keen to go for a quick blat and not do the whole coro loop, i'd be keen to join you guys on a Scenic Drive ride.

that's about 5% of scenic drive and the rest just the road to piha

the 'proper' route goes through waitakere, bethells, the whole of scenic drive, piha AND huia!

I'm so tired after that one haha (probly coz I went out last night till 3am)

That's nice short ride to Piha. I wanna try it in dry condition!

I would say reccomended for Learner but take it very slow, otherwise those things above gonna make your either wheel slip badly!!

watch out with the sleep/fatigue thing though; last time i went on a learner ride on that road with only 3 hours sleep it ended in disaster.
