Once again (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=1580568#post1580568), two nameless folk have bought new motorbikes, this time down past Dannevirke.

One has a trailer.

One has a car [which he can swap for a car with MOAR POWAR].

And so Captain Bligh and Professional Passenger hatch a nefarious plan.

These two intrepid heroes, along with their sidekicks Wonder Woman, Unremarkable Man and the Golden Mane bravely set out, away from the city of a million moccachinoes.

We leave the first house at 1pm. By the time we have spilt one engine-worth of oil into the trailer and waiting for a anonymous chap to condition his hair we manage to leave Auckland at 5pm.

Taupo before dark? Ha! Whilst rocking along the Taupo coast road we pull up behind a truck. What a godsend - now we can leech off his headlights (which actually illuminate things!) and we follow as he thrashes it along the desert road, crossing the centreline and pulling away from us on the hills. :blank:

We hit Palmerston North around midnight and drop off Clivoris' motor to him and AJTurbo. We then find out that apparently the entire city (Ha!) of Palmerston North spends Friday nights at church. After we give up on finding a bar suddenly we see flashing red and blue! Hrmmm, I suppose that headlights are moderately important. Pull over and have a chat to the lovely gal and her colleagues in the booze-wagon - and roll away with a set of directions back to Clivoris' lawn.

After several hours of talking shite we discover that the old Commodores have DAMN comfy seats to sleep in.

The Doomwagon goes forth.

We wake up in the morning and disappear in search of petrol. Cruising along at 90km/h we see disco lights behind us. Again.

Turns out the trailer isn't warranted. Doh. Taking my word (ha!) that there are two full license holders in the passenger seats the cop throws us a ticket which we can get off within 14 days by WOFing the trailer. Fooking thanks mate! :niceone:

Arriving at our target (eventually) we collect the loot and do a runner.

Reaching Fielding, we spot that the oil pressure gauge is registering nil. Hrmm. Oh and what's that? The temperature guage is well in the red? Methinks it may be time to make a slight detour to the nearest shoulder we can or cannot fit onto!

<img src="http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=960&pictureid=9207">

Okay, let us apply our motorbike knowledge to cars. No oil pressure. No coolant. Redlined temperature guage. Well, Holden nearly sounds like Honda, so let's just keep going regardless!

Damn westies!
I didn't find the commodore that comfy to sleep in, but I was sleeping in the boot on top of a fire extinguisher.

Conelius got us in trouble twice!
We were taking photos with him at the army museum, you know climbing on tanks, trying to stick him on the end of the barrels and such when a security guard decided that this cone was one of his.
He proceeded to yell at us from the entrance, not to take photos with the cone while we kindly explain to him that it's our cone so he can fuck off.
He then stood there giving us the evils till we left.

Much later on we found a roadblock where we were briefly searched by a cop armed with a flashlight. Who knew they were looking for cones eh?
He told us off for having it but I think he let us off once he realised he couldn't care for the conelius as well as we could.

Road trips are classic quintessential rites of passage ... heck, I even go on them impromptuly! I guess Cornelius was giving the rozzers the raspberry so attracted them quick smart ...

I take it the infusion of moar oil into the engine helped it summit wat? More importantly, the sidecar all works tickety-boo?

loading bikes without wheels onto trailers:

pull out the axle before lying on the side the axle pulls out from
always check that the left hand cover is present before laying it onto the left hand side

long story short, we had to make a wee stop by placemakers to see ross about getting some sand in the trailer

now while jafa and i did prove very effective at talking our way out of trouble while the others pull the beer bottles down from the windows, we still had a bit to learn about avoiding police:

don't drive a station wagon full of people, with a trailer, aimlessly around suburbs at 1am without your headlights on
check that the trailer has a current wof before you leave
having a traffic cone in the back apparently distracts the fun police from technical breach of driver's licence conditions
don't let a westie drive a celica in west auckland late on a saturday night

navigation:

westie knows better than maps
maps from 1986 aren't that accurate anymore
asking at shell stations for directions just leads you to another shell station

budgeting:

we had to get from the hauraki plains to auckland on just $17.60.... sure am glad i didn't buy that ice cream at the previous stop!

automoblies:

oil pressure guages on holdens fail when things get too hot
service records run to 115000km, only service recorded, however, was at 15000km
when, "the odo stopped working at 230,000km", perhaps you should look at another vehicle... maybe even one with air conditioning

Please tell me that these partial bikes are not joining Squiggles bursting garage... There'll be no room for SMC fix its before long...

(snipppy)
long story short, we had to make a wee stop by placemakers to see ross about getting some sand in the trailer

Not to mention that D shackle for the safety chain! Than feck you had that, or the friendly orrificer might not have been so nice to y'all with your dodgy trailer!

My addition - Police don't like a toot and a friendly wave when they're parked up at night with all their lights off sending radar pulses at suspiciously swift looking cars. :shifty:

In fact, if you do it twice (soley because your passenger egged you on, of course) they follow you for a while to freak you out and then pull you over to check everything over while claiming you were 'trying to get their attention' :Police:

(Disclaimer - All of which I completely deserved for being so cheeky...and it was a few years back, before I became 'old and sensible'™)

Oh, and we became an honorary truck on the way down to palmy too. Over the desert road we noticed our super speedy guide truck kept winking with the right indicator at all the other trucks. So we decided to try it too. Not sure what the final count was, but I reckon we got at least 30 winks back by the time we reached our destination (and had passed the truck depot 3 times. LOST!)

Oh, and did oyu know that once you tee off a golf ball you hand over ownership of it to the green? So you can't go into the bushes and take the 4 balls you find because that is theft? I woke up on the Hauraki plains to some guy in blue leaning in the window giving us the learn on golfball ownership and eyeing up Conelius. Thay can't take him! No! He is like a child!
