Am open for destination suggestions, but will prob head up 16 as well, or hit some of the rodes out west.

You may want to remove the plates from the pictures (just whiten them up), as a lot don't like their plates being posted in public.

There's a big thread about it here somewhere, can't be bothered finding it lol. Bus lanes in city are seen as fine, but it's the motorway ones which are unclear.

TOTO
29th October 2008, 09:46
You are allowed to use all bus lanes in the city but not allowed to use bus lanes on the motorway.

It was the nor western, Now ill tell the story
I do this every day... usually stand up on the pegs so I can look for cop's i didnt yesterday then right there in front of a truck was a cop.
No time to duck back in so i just cruised past pretending I handnt done nothing wrong ( this worked a few times in the past )

Of course I got pulled up , He ask's me are you allowed to ride in bus lanes I said "yup" with a big grin . he said ok got your license so I handed it over. he went back to the car and was on the radio asking them and they came back and said yes he is allowed. I got let of and told to sort uot my number plate ;-)

I did my license test last week and guy told me same thing ( i didn't believe him )

To the cops that cruise these threads any idea if we allowed or not?

Slyer
29th October 2008, 10:12
Ah yes, there's the difference between "Not supposed to", "Allowed to" and "Get away with." :)

I'm not a cop, but the topic has been done (and re-done) at great length in other threads (best to read them).

Not allowed to use motorway bus lanes. Its complicated, rules aren't being followed by council, but it boils down to the fact that it isn't actually a bus lane, rather a hard shoulder, which "allows" buses at times.

More detail? There are threads ;)

A STRAIGHT ANSWER:

the signs on the motorway clearly state 'buses ONLY' - often for safety and or special route reasons like the north shore system

ltnz allows us to use all other bus lanes that aren't explicitly buses only

cops on the other hand, will usually execute common sense - i've never been pulled up but if i have to pay the fine i guess that's the price of travelling out of reach of most the cagers. ie it's safer than splitting.

be aware that there is a lot of debris, risking a puncture, and cagers may decide to pull out for some reason and technically you will be both injured and in the wrong, so myself i keep to 80kph.

Ah yes, there's the difference between "Not supposed to", "Allowed to" and "Get away with." :)

that's the one:niceone:

what gets me is the time i got a puncture on the northwestern, ironically while splitting because the buslane ends at on/offramps, the bus drivers seemed to think i wasn't allowed to use the shoulder to leave my bike while i waited for a pickup, and were all to keen to hurl abuse at me sitting on the rocks by the beach.
if it was a car i would've been on the shoulder as a jack will sink in soft ground and/or topple
and of course the bike stand went straight into the dirt when i tried it.

cop pulled up and said i was perfectly legal pulled up there, but apparently it's a $150 fine if you stop on the motorway for anything other than a mechanical breakdown/emergency.
ie, if you run out of gas, make sure you tell the cops that you've siezed it or something.

I also only do 70 - 80km max, its way safer and quicker, and yes ive had a puncture from splitting also funny that haha bloody sucks eh.
