Concerns over local accident rates involving small capacity motorcycles and mopeds, led Barrow, UK firefighters to step in to get the safety message across.

The firefighters, in partnership with the Barrow Casualties Union, have created a graphic crash simulation in which a blood spattered bonnet and a splintered windscreen – shattered by a motorcyclist’s head features prominently. Beneath the wheels of the car is the victim’s mangled motorcycle.

Jon Griffiths, station manager of community safety at Barrow Fire and Rescue said of the first showing of the simulation to a test audience “If we can educate those in the slight injury group it will hopefully impact further in reducing more serious accidents. I think it got the message across really well because of the graphic nature.”

Ten per cent of all accidents in Barrow in the last year have involved a small-capacity motorcycle.
