So, who wants to go for a blat up muriwai beach?

We will enter from the gravel 4wd access just north of the muriwai swimming end of the beach, and get a fair distance north before beginning any shenanigans.

When we approach the "half a tank of fuel/incoming tide (http://www.metservice.co.nz/default/index.php?alias=muriwai_beachtides)" point we'll head back.

All in all it should be a fun blat up the beach:D

Tide Timing:
High tide is at 10am, Low at 4pm, High again at 10pm

SO, if we

meet outside engineering on symonds street at 10am
leave uni by 10:30am
stop by BP Kumeu for gas at 11am
get on the beach at noon (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&saddr=Symonds+St&daddr=Motutara+Rd,+0881&hl=en&geocode=FZirzf0d5MRqCg%3B&mra=ls&sll=-36.783064,174.568291&sspn=0.025366,0.043774&ie=UTF8&ll=-36.798289,174.613266&spn=0.202888,0.350189&t=h&z=12)

we should be set with plenty enough beach to begin the run, and no real concern for being caught by the tide.

then...

have lunch and turn around at 2 or 3 unless fuel dictates sooner
get off the beach at 4 or 5 at the latest
be home in time for dinner/beers:2thumbsup

sorted!

Remember it is salty, gritty, somewhat dangerous (mind you there isn't any cheesecutters, blind corners or poles) and the tides can always surprise you. There ARE cagers and I can tell you from experience they can be just as retarded as the ones on the road.

There is a very shallow stream crossing on the beach - video of access here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1874835&postcount=32)

Put plenty of lube on those chains before and after and be sure to give your bike a very thorough wash afterwards;)

Dirtbikes welcome - I will be using one myself - but it IS classed as a road so technically you need a licence/rego etc. never had trouble in the past but no promises.
Sprotsbikes not recommended but we won't be stopping you - remember your bike will be sandblasted and if you get tank slappers on the road the sand will be much, much worse.

A farm quad/4WD would be good to carry petrol, or maybe a bike with a pack rack will do. most small bikes and motox bikes will only last 2 or 3 hours tops to a tank, and while we should be ok, I dont think the AA will go to the south head while the tide is coming in.

Due to tides, the rain date will be saturday the 7th of february

Im in bud, um how are you getting your db there and if so can i borrow the 250/125 haha. Pweeeeease! otherwise the mighty srv and I are in. Soft sand ahah I laugh in the face of soft sand *more like I laugh when I faceplant into the soft sand off my bike*

Wait, an excellent excuse to put tkc80s on my bike then I will have knobbly power! *if I cant borrow one of your dirt bikes*

motorbyclist
1st January 2009, 12:40
yeah, the beach is interesting with regards to soft sand

the soft stuff moves so you get a bit wobbly and use a lot of power just to push through it

the hard stuff is mint for cruising along at speed but it's wet with salt water and there is a risk of hitting soft spots... only an issue for sprotsbikes and 4WDs though

I'm, a starter. But going up on the ebb and coming back on the flood is risky. If you get delayed you can be caught at full tide in the cliff section.

We used to reckon it best to go up on the flood hang out in the dunes over high tide, then head back on the ebb.

Theres only a shortish section where you can't get above high tide.

But the timing doesn't always work.

sounds like an adventure! pack the safety kits, rope and the ever trusty no 8 wire. Extra cans of petrol and a good ol socket set. No man or bike gets left behind. Oh an a quad would be great for towing bikes stuck in soft sand out.

considering the high tide is after dark we should be ok - i figure we won't be out long enough to bother getting road bikes up dunes, and provided we turn back by 3, at which time the tide will still be heading out, we should be ok

though if this was a dirt-only ride I do agree with you and head out so the tide is in while we muck about in the dunes

I will be towing my dirtbike out there on a trailer, so if we talk to the old man nicely he might let the ute on the beach

yeah, both times we've had cager trouble (how else does one hurt themselves on a straight bit of road?) on that beach the cops didn't seem to care about the bikes or licences... actually they didn't seem to care too much at all..... nor did the cagers.....

paramedics, doctors, surgeons and parents did though:niceone:

the xl125, experience tells us, can have overheating problems on the beach and doesn't have the power to keep on top of the soft sand if you try to get into the dunes

the yz250F depends on if the old man is coming - and i might mention that your srv is perfectly capable for this so i might leave it for those moar in need

Would be keen for this ride if only I was not in the south island that weekend.

Have fun, look forward to seeing your photos.
I have done a bit of a rip along the northern part of the beach up near Rimmer road (down from the sandpit), which could also be a good spot to start the ride, it would provide a nice gravel based intro before you hit the beach.

It's hard to tell from the vid, but i'm guessing the sand cant have been toooooo super soft if you managed to go straight through like that? Last time i was out that way it was whooped to hell, it was hard work tryin to even walk that entrance, and big 4WD's and one farm bike struggled to make it. Looks like it's gotten better now though :woohoo:

no it wasn't/isn't too bad at all, just kept to a tyre track and was fine, though the bike sure got wobbly on the soft sand high up on the beach

though i might add i was running (what turned out to be) 20psi in that 180 rear - should be 36 - and used a fair bit of dirt biking skill to keep it going where i wanted it

so just skip straight to bp kumeu, leaving there at 11 as per the plan

piratejafa will be at symonds to pass this message on - wearing fluro vest, riding black/dark silver vfr400 with obvious crash damage to the rear of the bike (rear ended)

i will be waiting at kumeu in what is now to be a purple/silver double cab ute with canopy and two or three blue yamaha motox bikes on the trailer OR a white hiace full of yamaha

Was a most excellent day, had an absolute blast, and no cops to be seen. Had some awesome fun giving her a real windout (first ride since the rebuild), playing in the waves, running through the potholes, and whoopin it around in the soft stuff (faceplants included! :2thumbsup) And had far too much fun seeing the 450's blast off ahead, and just rolling on into powerband and drifting past them as they wound it out  She goes bloody well for a little 200cc trail bike  Have a rough idea of her top speed now (after keepin with the GPX on a straightaway), and it scares me to think about it...
And now i know for next time that she'll run for about 2h before hittin reserve (only just hit it about 3-5 min before we got back to the entrance :wari:)

Bloody chain pissed me off a bit, stretched a country mile in the time we were out, smashed a couple of teeth off the front sprocket. Oh well, they would have needed doing in a few rides anyways, so will just do the whole lot now. Gettin a big grunty O-ring chain for sure

All in all, a bloody good day. Been wanting to go for a blast up the beach for ages, but didnt really wanna head off by myself. Now i know what to expect i will have to do it again sometime :woohoo:

I don't think I'll ever be doing it again sans nobblies though!

Binned the bike twice, once while being forced over into the soft sand and getting extremely wobbly until I couldn't control it.
The other time was when I got a bit too confident plowing through the puddles, they got progressively bigger till there was one so big that it completely stopped the front wheel.
Snapped off the top of my wind shield and twisted my forks out of alignment.

We all needed maor power. And most of us needed moar knobs.

The potholes were decidedly disconcerting. I didn't encounter them at all on the way up, so they were a bit of a surprise on the way back. I think I was leading on the way up, obviously picked a better route. They were bad enough that they totally dislodged my careful and well engineered luggage stowage.

It was not so much a mtter of not being able to turn to avoid the hole, but that , no matter which way one turned, turning just headed one straight into another hole! And they didn't LOOK that bad. Until you hit them. I was sure I was going to rupture a kidney or something.
