Reminds me of...

"It is completely legal to get knee down on a public road" - Tom.

Care to elaborate on what you are on about.

The name of the group just struck me as odd....as a former lecturer at Auckland University I was continuously pounded with a "collective view", so the Idea of individual freedom of riding a motorycle is in complete opposition to the Marxist views of the University.

Okay, why didn't you just say that in the first place.

I did;
Just gotta use individual interpretation rather than having it spelled out or spoon fed. See the irony about the group name?

You're pretty smart for a lecturer. You're not from around here are you?

Still on a restricted motorbike licence though, so haven't learned everything, but always pushing everyone to learn everything they can!

It was blindingly obvious and refreshing at the same time.

You'll enjoy NZ - there's lots of artificial intelligence here.

Thanks for that. I thought it would be obvious to most of the fish school but I couldn't resist baiting the darwinistic stragglers.

Afterall, ironry is a staple of humour.

LOL, i suspect you mean there's a lot of "parroting" in NZ. I agree; it's easier to teach a computer to think for itself than a human.

Uni's are great for learning.....just keep in mind to read your professor and his views; write your papers accordingly to what he or she deems 'good'. that'll give you passing grades.

outside of school go by your own thoughts and morals.

Hmm, was it sarcasm (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sarcasm)?

sarcasm (plural sarcasms)
1. (uncountable) A form of humor that is marked by mocking with irony, sometimes conveyed in speech with vocal over-emphasis. Saying something that is opposite of what is intended to be meant.
2. (countable) An act of sarcasm.

No, it was irony (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/irony), in the first sense below:

irony (plural ironies)

1. A statement that, when taken in context, may actually mean the opposite of what is written literally; the use of words expressing something other than their literal intention, notably as a form of humor.
2. (colloquial) The quality or state of an event being both coincidental and contradictory in a humorous or poignant and extremely improbable way.

Clearly I should have used some more emoticons. :zzzz: :innocent:

I still don't see what is humorous, poignant or improbable about university students riding motorcycles. :bye:

I was refering to a socialist (re: collective) University (captive group ready for branding in the guise of learning), having a group about motorcycles.

It just struck me as ironic (as far as a collective excersicing individual form of transport). Irony akin to using a happy cartoon chicken to promote a fried chicken francise.

Auckland Uni Faculty is totally against the idea of motorcycles because they are an alternative to gridlock and stand in the way of mass transit (I imagine they are very strict about where your WOF are displayed if i remember correctly).

You see the irony?

Mind you I never said anything was "humorous, poignant or improbable about university students riding motorcycles." But liberal parroting would interpret I did.

Mass transit? This is Auckland, wait, New Zealand. Go to Melbourne if ya want mass transit, 700 trains cancelled last Friday

The Uni is fussy about WOF's? Hmmm... I don't think parking wardens have been promoted to Uni lecturers quite yet.

Does someone want to translate this thread into laymans terms as it goes along, along with definitions of marxism (sp?) and the such.

Hmmm I reckon you need a faster bike, less thinking about the name of the club and more on the road ahead of you. *note even on a slow bike you should be thinking about the road*

Isn't the group name odd?

Auckland Uni student's using two wheels to drive? shouldn't it be about mass transit and social responsiblility?

the group name isn't very odd, being the UofA bike club

and to be honest, most of our members (not the ones who turn up on rides/post here) are scooter riders who have bought the thing more as an accessory than anything else.

the rest of the sheep either can't afford a bike or don't realise how much better off they would be if they got one. we all universally find the trains and buses frustratingly slow and expensive. many students find it cheaper and faster to drive to free/cheap parking and walk the rest of the journey than take the bus

while i can agree writing what a lecturer wants will get you marks, i have to ask what field you're in.... those of us in science/maths/engineering/medicine tend to deal with facts/numbers/established theories, not opinions in our work.

In laymans terms. Apparently the University (which I thought was supposed to be a politically impartial place of learning and open mindedness) is Marxist (which the media has us trained to refer to as Communism, Socialism, left wing politics etc.) This kind of political bent believes more in massed transit systems (trains, buses, trams etc.) and communal facilities (high rose blocks of flats).

HOWEVER - since Auckland doesn't have a mass transit sysstem to speak of many people have chosen to save fuel (since a car is the real alternative and capitalist to boot!) and buy a 250cc bike - they have then enjoyed the bike so much that they have bought a bigger bike - they have enjoyed this experience so much that they have chosen to share with others in a ...well...communal kind of way and have therefore created their own group.

It's not really very ironic at all is it?

Ho hum.

Or several.

I am a communist (though not a Marxist) and I don't believe in mass transit systems or communal facilities. I do believe in bikes. There is an enormous thesis corpus available to anyone who wants to explore the effect of the ready availability of personalised transport that was affordable to the proletariat. (actually I think its been done). In fact , it destroyed the classical proletariat as a class.

And when I was at university (admittedly a century or two ago), whilst most of my topics did not afford scope for disagreement , in those that did, I ALWAYS disagreed with the lecturer on principle. And was not, I think, marked down therefore.

And, whilst I am certainly disappointed in the students of today , a wimpish and subservient lot, it still holds true that if anyone is going to stick it to the Man it will be the bikers.

You focus on the University Scooter and Motorcycle. You should focus on the University Scooter and Motorcycle.

Anyone wonder how long it took skid's posts to be allowed?

Bikes are awesome, a 50 minute bus ride + 10 minute walk or a 15 minute bike ride + 1 minute walk. Hmmmmm.

Heh, gotta love the way the majority of our club rides scooters, yet you never see anyone who rides a scooter

Wow! I didn't expect this much feedback, but from the comments posted it appears that the Uni isn't meeting it's goals on 'collectivism"; that's a good thing.....nice to know the Uni students are keeping an open mind and individuality!
