well as some of you know i got a vt250 from richard (rwh)
<a href="http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/?action=view&current=1986VT250FG.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/1986VT250FG.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
and a box of spares and 2 spare engines,

<a href="http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/?action=view&current=DSCF1930Small.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/DSCF1930Small.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
i set about first just doing the valve clearances on the engine that was in the bike
<a href="http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/?action=view&current=DSCF1931Small.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/DSCF1931Small.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
but to no avail, so i started stripping down the good spare engine (the original engine that was in the bike)
<a href="http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/?action=view&current=DSCF1939Small.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/DSCF1939Small.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
cams out, immm strange tensioner
<a href="http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/?action=view&current=DSCF1941Small.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/DSCF1941Small.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
well thats a black carboned up[ piston (carbon was about 2mm thick)
and the valves wern't much better
<a href="http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/?action=view&current=DSCF1942Small.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/DSCF1942Small.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
so after cleaning up the piston and lapping the valves
she started to look a bit better
<a href="http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/?action=view&current=DSCF1945Small.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/DSCF1945Small.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
its a funny system, in order to get the piston out you need to come at it from the bottom and undo the conrod from the crank,
while i was at it i cleaned up the exhaust port
<a href="http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/?action=view&current=DSCF1949Small.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/DSCF1949Small.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
and painted up the exhaust
<a href="http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/?action=view&current=DSCF1960Small.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/DSCF1960Small.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
i put it all back together and chucked it in the frame (with the help of my girlfriend, much to her disgust, hehe)

i the first start up
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/e-gOli4wmGo&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/e-gOli4wmGo&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

good aye :D
i have all the fairings back on now and have cleaned up the chain ect,
i just need to fill her up, pump up the tyres, bleed the brake, and she'll be away laughing,

so $50 for a bike ain't bad (oil, spark plugs, carb cleaner, and degreeser)

So there was no problem with the bigend or main bearings? All that rattling was from loose valves? Bugger :-)

OWNM - good luck :-)

nah the conrod journels were fine (would have been a easy fix if it were that as you can access it through the sump)
there doesnt seem to be any play in the crank bearings either,
a couple of the valves needed serious lapping, but the main problem i think was the amount of carbon build up on both the piston and valves,
the rear cylinder didnt seem to be any where near as bad as the front cylinder, but probably still bad enough,
more time than anything was required to fix it, and clean everything, the carbs were pretty gummed up as well
