My 03 CBR600RR clunks when I change from N to first when I go to take off at lights intersections etc. My old bike did it as well so I think its normal.

IS IT?

It's a Honda thing. 'nuff said.

Every bike I've ever owned has done this to some extent. So YES!

Yup, Honda thang.
You can minimise it by either letting the clutch out very slightly as you put it into gear, or roll the bike forward a little, or both. Even a few cm will help, as it gets the dogs'n'cogs in the right positions.

My FJR used to occasionally do this. The Shiver, hardly at all.

My Hornet does it every time without fail, it's almost reassuring now, I know it's really in first when I feel that clunk!

yes, tells me the gearbox is still attached to the engine.

I especially love the spontanaety in the way i hit a 'void of nothingness' between 5th & 6th at 90km/hr

Yip thats perfectly normal, infact I'd be worried if it didn't clunk! They all do it from an old NSR250 to the latest model Blade.

Check yer chain tension.

Yep, a tight chain can make it worse.

being an old beast, it always clunks down from n but on the very odd occasion, it freaking slams in with a bit of a lurch and drags the clutch for a while might have to try a thicker oil??

Can someone explain what exactly happens (inside the gearbox) when the bike makes this noise? Have always been wondering.
