Following criticism of the policing of the 2008 Bulldog Bash, a working party comprising police and residents is to be established

Warwickshire Police said its £1m operation at the Bulldog Bash in Long Marston was needed after a Gerry Tobin was murdered on his way home in 2007. If the Bulldog Bash goes ahead in 2009 there will need to be a significant policing operation - how that will be carried out is still to be decided.

Assistant Chief Constable Bill Holland said he would prefer there to be no event in 2009, as the Warwickshire force assesses whether they can request a review of the licence, which was granted by Stratford District Council last year despite police objections.

So the police want to help run a gang-organised event?

I think - and this is wonderfully ironic - that the problem last year was that the £1m operation closed off a lot of roads etc to ensure that they could monitor activity, protect locals etc - trouble was, they effectively closed off the locals from going out!

So gang members, we'll give you lots of roads to ride on... but locals? We'll fence you in!

Sounds rather back to front to me...

just bill the organisers up front for the policing costs

the ha make more than enough money out of this event to be able to pay for adecuate policing
