View Full Version : How often should clutch fluid be changed?

Hi all,

I'm presuming since it's brake fluid, and therefore hydroscopic, that it needs to be changed regularly.

Any idea how often? And how hard is it to do?

thanks,

Yes, needs changing just as frequently as brake fluid. Every 8-12 months is about right I believe.

All depends how, what, where you take your machine. No situation is the same. Also depends on the spec. fluid you use.

Everything is relative upon use.

brakefluid indeed attracts moisture....more critical in brakes of course.
Cant imagine much heat building up in "clutching"......
You can tell a lot from just looking at the oil in you reservoir....
Does it look like the oil from your bottle?
If not change....
Cheap and easy enough to do every now and again

Some workshops will have a moisture detector that samples the amount of water in the fluid, great tools but given the cost do them both at the same time.

Indeed. 8 months if bikes used daily and 12 months if not used at all.

I would not use fluid older than 12 months.

Hygroscopic. Counter-intuitive, I know.

I change clutch and brake fluid every time I do brake pads.

But still plenty of potential for corrosion from the moisture.

and on a dry clutch Duc, you change the clutch oil when it changes color, about every 8 to 12 months depending on use, on mine.

Gah, I thought I was doing so well.

Thanks everyone, looks like I need to change it.

Hmmmm... hadn't thought of that.

...change the clutch oil when it changes color
So, that means every month for me, or thereabouts.
