Well, finally a little progress with the purchase of the Ignitech ignition. Sorting the wiring and then instal the curve supplied by Wobbly (included in the price). Maybe I will make it to the 2013 PMCC Summer Series...
The project is waiting for funds to continue. A programmable CDI required and bills to pay. I'm hoping it will be running in about a years time if things go well.
Expert and others are correct about the polarity of the pickups. I have fixed that issue. The pickups are now at 90° and it works. I'm working on the final design backplate now and mounting the triggers so they adjust as a pair (the software for the CDI allows for any other changes to the timing to be made). I had intended to race it at the Taupo Road Race Spectacular but a lack of money has forced me to withdraw my entry. That also means not much is happening on the project as funds have ...
The CDI issues have been resolved. The Jaycar cheapies work well - when the correct wires are attached. The stator I was using had the high voltage CDI wires cut off and only the lighting circuit wires left. Novice that I am I used those. Wrong. It works on the RGV CDI as that has it's own step up transformer in the unit so it doesn't need the high voltage charge. In fact the RGV stator only has power that will be rectified. I don't know that. Anyway, back to the current CDI set up. ...
I have had the engine running on an RGV250K CDI module but it had a miss which I suspect is the timing advance built into the CDI. As the RD400 didn't have an advance curve I decided to try the simplest CDI I could find - Jaycars kit KC5466. No problem assembling the CDI and checking it's all OK but it requires an input of 350VAC... I measured the output of the stator on one wire and got between 8VAC and 12VAC. A friend of mine tried a trick of putting one wire to earth and got 20VAC ...
I've had a few offers of brake calipers since my last post. If you think you can help it's a ZXR250A right hand front caliper complete with the mount (which holds the pads). Below are pics of a left hand caliper. Anyway - got the thing running last night. I took the mains out and hooked everything up. After much kicking without result I went over everything with #1 TDC (remember this) ...
I have spark. The chambers are fitted. I have made the throttle cables. The clutch is connected and working. The top fairing is on it's way. I have found a front brake caliper (no money to spare for it though) A little work to do to the carbs and we'll see if it runs. Then it's tuning time!
I have fitted a RD-LC flywheel and stator with two pickups from an RGV VJ21. I'm planning on using the stator to supply power to to the CDI. My question is how to wire this up. My guess is to run the three stator wires to the Rectifier. There are two wires out - Red and Black/White. Red I'm guessing is + and the Black/White is (-). On the CDI I've sorted out the coil wires. What's left is a Black/Yellow (tacho), Black/White (-), and Orange/Black. ...
