  1. USA D22: Cody to Gillette (06/08/2011)

6.15am and there’s an urgent knocking at the door, calling for me. While trying to gain some semblance of open eyes and an idea of where I am, Murray is up and answering the door. Ernie reports there is oil under my bike, and looks like it has leaked.

While rubbing sleep from my eyes I’m stumbling outside to take a look, and sure enough, a large puddle of oil under the bike. I’m thinking shit, how could this happen, is it because it’s on its side stand? Perhaps ...

  2. USA D21: Day Trip over Beartooth Highway (05/08/2011)

*sigh... behind again in my blogging. Some nights the wireless hasn't worked, others I headed straight for bed...*

Alarm at 7.30am… still too early, but the Beartooth Highway needed to be ridden. Some crazies had started their bikes and left at 5.30am, and then some more at 7am, I wasn’t going with any of them.

Mark and Gerry had had a long previous day, so also had no intention of starting at 7am, so we made a plan to leave at 8.45am. Predictably, I was slightly ...

  3. USA D20: Jackson Hole to Cody (04/08/2011)

Alarm at 7am, Murray is up quickly again, he likes getting on the road early, seeing lots of things and generally taking his time. The earlier he starts, the more time he has. I’m rather the opposite, leaving later, stopping less, just doing what I want to do and rocking through the mileage.

No breakfast provided this morning, but I use the morning to check emails and blog, also reading Mark and Gerry’s. Thank goodness I used the deadlock to lock the door when Murray left, ...

  5. pt.1 Inauspicious and tedious beginnings

As a time filler for those rainy nights when I can't go riding I have decided to mod my helmet to look like the lid of master cheif from halo.

    My aims are thus:
    1) my helmet remains safe to use on the road.
    2) it looks realistic.
    3) it is as inexpensive as possible owing to me being a poor student.
    4) it can be removed from the actual helmet at will.

    And the plan was to:
    1) print and cut the pieces on/out of 250gsm card

  6. Riding around Europe Post 17: Crete

Crete. I intended to spend only a few days on this historic island but like many islands it has a way of sneaking up on you and delaying your departure. I found a nice hotel, with a pool, near the beach, safe parking for the bike and wifi.

New Zealanders have some status on Crete. The exploits of the NZ Forces and the 28th Maori Battalion are well known and it was here that Upham won the first of his Victoria Crosses. The 10 day battle was unique for several reasons : It ...

  7. USA D19: Big Sky to Jackson Hole (03/08/2011)

Alarm rang at 7am, but I’d already heard the guys up and around at some ungodly hour like 4am. Nutters. I think I heard Murray coming up, to collect his phone, that had been on charge. He likes room sharing with me, as I’ve got the electronic stuff sorted (and I wouldn’t have it any other way).

He thought he could simply plug it in, until I told him there is different voltage and different plugs. I solved this by buying an NZ 4 plug powerboard, with 2 USB slots, so ...

  8. USA D18: Butte to Big Sky (02/08/2011)

Alarm at 7am. I can’t be arsed getting up, letting Murray get ready (even conned him into taking my bag to the van as well). Took the flak for lying in bed… unfortunate our room was right next to the bikes, but hey, nice short walk unloading the bike.

After much noise (the talking sort… sheesh, some people are trying to sleep) they left at 8am, and I rolled over and went back to sleep. Alarm went again and I took my time getting up. Eventually packed, and pondered ...
