The Daylight Saving season is about to end in ten days or so and with it was my own personal commitment to sell my bike before the end of this season and to walk the golf course this autumn and winter. The bike sold last night. The clubs and golf shoes are clean and I will be lining up a few putts very shortly.
Motorcycle riding without any question has been very beneficial to me and ironically to say that I have ridden 77,000km since May 2006, owned five bikes, and not been any further up SH1 than Hunterville – well one may think that in itself this is a bit obsessive. Honestly, perhaps it was, but in achieving some personal goals I set, I have gained more than I realised. I address some of these goals in the following topics.
Community Awareness & Safe Motorcycle Riding
I once referred to motorcycling as a case of ‘Shit Happens’ but in time I reviewed that opinion to a more measured tone: motorcycling is all about ‘Perception’.
Your own perception in particular of risk taking be the risk measured, or a moment caught up in the whole euphoria of riding, we hopefully find much enjoyment and learn from our riding experiences. Without doubt coming to terms with motorcycle riding for me was an extremely rewarding experience, and I will always be thankful to those that provided professional motorcycle training, and also to the numerous well meaning ‘experienced riders’ for their encouragement over the years. Sadly a few of those riders are no longer with us, but out on the road my late Mentor’s spirit was etched in my mind and his guidance comments were reinforced by the professional instructor.
I think it comes to the fore the comment ‘Do as I say, not as I do,’ and this is particularly relevant when considering the important line ‘Ride your own ride.’
Without doubt motorcycling is a very enjoyable pastime and I am sure that within the community of motorcyclists most recognise the trials and tribulations the novice through to the experienced rider encounter. When and where it is possible to see levels of risk and reduce them by providing alternative opportunities to gaining improved riding skill and technique, this can be achieved.
Alternative Programmed Rides – Tuesdays and Wednesdays
I am not going to be critical of any group of riders, that otherwise may be ‘protective’ of their own perceived rights to congregate on a Wednesday or a Sunday and go for a ride under the mantra of ‘ride your own ride’, for they are entitled to ‘do their own thing’. I did however feel that it was appropriate to provide alternative and additional riding events through the week (and occasional weekends) for the novice 250cc paced riders, and the ‘experienced’ Alternative Wednesday riders that perhaps wanted to avoid the relatively quicker paced bikes and ride to other destinations.
During the eight weeks through February March, I have been very pleased with the level of interest and support shown by all that attended the Tuesday evening rides and for the personal comments of thanks and gratitude. You are all very welcome, and to Cam and Eugene, and the other experienced riders, Kenny and Dave, that assisted on the Tuesday and occasional Saturday morning rides thank you for your support.
Within the community of motorcyclists, I am confident in saying novice riders, young and old, appreciate the opportunity to attend these type of programmed riding events through the week. It is my hope that not only individuals here on Kiwibiker, but also officials within motorcycle clubs and government agencies look toward promoting activities and events that cater for the ‘inexperienced’ rider, the older rider returning to motorcycling, and indeed all motorcyclists in general.
Closing Remarks
Riding events and activities sponsored and supported by organisations and the private individuals that give generously of their time, are goals that can be set by those with the community spirit to improve motorcycle safety and hopefully reduce the rate of injury and fatality.
Thank you for your company, your time, your generosity and your encouragement.
Enjoy your weekend rides this winter.
