man comon!
13 hours that welly and back not that im in at mo, binned last night
bro that sucks! what happend?
I can only get out at lunch or after work and last night was a no go for me. So I decided I'd go for a quick run North or South from Central Aucks. Looking at the rain radar I thought. I can out race that weather. I'll shoot down to Orini because most of you folk wouldn't have been there. Big mistake. I got owned by the weather in some serious cross winds and zero visibility. All to bring you a shot that takes you for a bit of a ride. I'd planned to shoot towards Mangatawhiri, then South through Kopuku Landing, Taniwha and down to Orini. As I headed south I could see this wave of blackness. I thought to myself, ... these roads through here are pretty good in the wet so who cares about a little rain. I continued to head South along this intended route until I hit Taniwha. At this point I decided this weather front was looking worse than I thought so I took the quickest route through to Tahuna Road and headed North on SH1. Somewhere along that route south of Mangatawhiri, after I hopped onto Kopuku Road is where I took this pic, amongst others, but I chose to use this one. Needless to say I had forgotten to factor in angular velocity and got caught out in the worst part of the storm. Incredibly poor visibility, flooded roads, and high cross winds meant it was incredibly dangerous. Any traffic I came across was barely moving. At this stage I knew I either had to stop and get wets on or try and out drag the storm. So I went for the out drag option. The winds were serious. I had decided to go for a higher speed knowing my bike had a better chance of staying upright. Gradually the wind speed slowed as I started to come out of the storm. I just kept going as hard as I could and finally pulled off at Pokeno to get wets on. Yeah I know wets on wet gear may not make sense but it stops the wind chill and allows the existing wet to warm. I was standing there half suited up when the strong winds just suddenly arrived and a pile of leaves blew off the tree next to me. Kind of like a ghost movie. I knew had had seconds to get out of there. With the last of the gear on I shot off North and it wasn't till opposite BP Papakura on SH1 that I cleared the rain front. So obviously I should have gone North. Bugger. The things I do for you lot. If only I could have got the morning off work I'd have gone for Raglan probably. If i had a weekend day I'd have gone Northish. So the pic's coming soon. Hopefully it's not too obvious but I wanted to make sure you'd see it on your ride and not miss it by blinking. And here's the pic. Have fun out there. I'm offline fron 9am -7pm for the next 4 days from Saturday so posts will be delayed. I hope this satisfies some of those that want a longer ride.
raglans not in auckland tho
I've checked google maps... and yep, you're right.
actually it dosent say in the rules that the picture has to be taken in auckland, fair call!
If you haven't been through these back roads they're great bike roads, hardly used and none or minimal tar bleed stuff.
RM we talked about how far out and 1-2 hours was thrown around. Personally for me a Friday or Saturday post can be longer but during the week in winter I'd be posting closer in so people could get to it. I was looking for what would make a nice Saturday or Sunday ride. You can bet if you post a long ride at the end of Sunday that it could sit for the week. Cheers.
Gyah! Not enough fuel to go after that one. --Kasper
There are petrol stations scattered around the countryside.
Yes but you need money for fuel. I am very low on work atm and therefor money. I have enough to get me down to Hamilton and back. but that's on Sunday. Ah the joy of being a freelancer Driver. If anyone needs, or knows of anyone needing a driver, please give me a call. --Kasper
kasper, don't get me started.. oh wait.. too late.. part time army drivers wanted. all licenses and training provided. working hours are flexible and quite often (usually 2-3 times a month, one of which is at least 3 days) enquire within for more info.
Not that I have participated but I think a ride out of but within 1 or 2 hours riding distance is fair game, makes the game more interesting although longer. which is not a bad thing its not like it doesnt take 2 hours two travse auckland at some hours of the day I do think that if the point is 1 hour out of auckland you should extend the retag rule to 24 hours after the weekend though
Pyrocam, I'm not sure why you'd need that. If I go for an hour ride on Saturday and pick up the tag I still have 36 hours to post. That seems like ample time. I think most would do two snaps while there out on a longer run. One to get the tag and the other for the next. I can't see any reason to add 24 hours after a weekend, if that's what you're meaning. So are you heading out to grab the tag? I'm wondering about the out of gas line above... :-)... time will tell.
