Not what 10BK is using but I've got an Oxford tank bag, expandable, can double as a backpack (has the straps but I've never tried it), pretty cheap but well made and mostly waterproof, even without the included rain cover. It doesn't work as a tank bag because the KLR has a pretty humpy shaped tank.

Good call, I just ordered their "OXFORD 1ST TIME EXPANDER", it's got great reviews on Amazon, plus it's on special... Looks perfect for what I want, cheers for the info!

What are those hand guards in the pic? I need to get some, looking at the barkbuster "storm", just not sure which fitting kit to order.

    Km per tank

So what sort of kms dose a KLR do to the tank...
looking at buying one in OZ to live at my brothers place
    in Briz..
A KLR or maybe a DR... but the DR seems to get less
    km per tank...
XT660R would be nice but they want silly $ for them
    over there .... like here....

pterry sure i was getting 280-300kms out of a tank. Maybe more if i wasn't riding with Jatz & woodman. If you keep it in brissy I would hire it off you for a few days every year.

KLRs are quite thirsty. The best i could get was 18km per litre, but usually less. Pretty sure I saw 400kms once when I had the original tank on. Was a boring ride though. Had to keep it under 5000rpm to limit oil usage.

That bike looks good, and a better and cheaper option than sending a bike over. Food for thought.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........

US Gallons... which works out to about 290 miles or 460 km's... which sounds very generous.

Woodman is probably closer to the money... I've only done 1,000KM on my KLR so far, so not too sure. I filled the tank up before a 300KM trip 2 weeks ago, and I'm still buzzing around town on the same tank.... I think 400KM's is doable.

Certain years have the oil burn issue, not sure which ones.

This Guy has managed to get 400KM's on a few occasions >>> http://www.klrclan.co.za/stories/12/...0-fuel-economy

It's a 2007 KLR, but I'm pretty sure the guts of the bike haven't changed since the 80's!

First of the Gen IIs (08 -09) were/are the oil burners. Looking at part numbers, the piston and rings have been through several changes. I'm tossing up between getting a stock 2014 piston and rings or spending the extra and going 685 or 688. (688 would be preferred, close enough to call it a 690 and give the orange riders fits)

They are barkbusters, I got them with the (secondhand) Renthal fatbars. I had to make some pieces to go between the inner bar mount and the guard bar so they are not ideal, but still saved the levers numerous times on the DB1K.

If you are travelling about 375-400km to reserve, (18L) with 4L left after that, I average 325-350km when doing my Murawai beach/road loop, have got down to 285km but was with a near full throttle up and down the beach run photo 20150626_105844_zpswmwioasz.jpg
