I would be keen on one of those beds helen ,I'm negotiating with my pillion to do the 2day'r 2up ,maybe have a go at the oldest bike/rider/pillion combo ?

Aghh, crap.
Looks like the lure of the south end is burrowing into my sub conscious.

If at all possible Ryan, i'm on this run. (probably do it as the two day ride)
Combining more riding with one or two others from the pig island, and getting kanny down sth on the Bandit is also part of the plan.
(I wonder if the Top House ghost will welcome me again

Good on ya TB. Really looking forward to getting down that way myself. The countryside and history is awesome. The crazy old coots must have had gold fever real bad back in the 19th century, cause living in a tent pretty much anywhere along the DB1k route would have been real rough.

The poll closes on the 31st July i.e. two Fridays away and it is looking like the weekend of the 16/17th Jan is a goer. If you want another date speak now or forever hold your peace (no not that piece!).

Draft roll chart is all but finished. Just need to give it a final check over prior to the Pre Run on Labour weekend. Distance measured on the computer is 1070kms and stacks of gravel (over 800kms)

This route is going to take a bit more navigating than the northern one (lots more intersections and far less of the long runs i.e. Molesworth/rainbow etc).

how hard will the ride be if you havent used a roll chart before? is the navigation pretty straightforward or do u need to have had practice in this sort of stuff before?

It is basically the same. The difference being you have indicators saying go left or right on the chart. You do have to make sure you scroll it regularly as by not doing this, you can get lost and miss the turn, then you have to backtrack to a last known position and match it to the rollchart...
AND, don't always follow the person in front, this is what makes navigating using a roll chart fun, it gives you that individuality about following a route successfully...

The hardest thing about the whole thing is making a good roll chart for the bike. I had two or three attempts and asked around and saw what others were fitting, doing etc.
Once you get a good one, stick with it, look after it because it WILL be your friend.
I am sure Ryan will have some handy hints for you as well as other experienced riders.
Take some time to practice with one too, reading and rolling whilst riding and at the same time trying to take in the scenery, watching for livestock and the road ahead....
A good roadbook will be accurate, have topgoraphical features sometimes to help you annotate and relate the chart to your position etc....

Good luck in making one, in using one and enjoy, remember, it isn't a race and you can always stop, study and ask, just like you would when navigating using a mapbook, but the rollchart is easier because you sometimes don't have to stop, navigate on the move....IT IS GREAT FUN....

If you rush you will most likely loose your place or miss a trip counter zeroing point which will make things tricky for a while.
If you want some practice there are a couple of charts starting in Christchurch floating around at home somewhere. We can jack up a ride sometime.
You go in front and navigate.
