How do you print the roll charts? (to a non a4 format)or do you draw them on a eftpos roll or similar.

My experience of these is they're printed on A4 or A3 in strips of 3-4, you then get busy with the scissors and sticky tape and join em all up.
Usually takes an hour or so to join up a whole route, but better and less time consuming than getting lost!

The software being used for the DB roll chart unfortunately has a bug in it that only prints one strip on an A4 sheet so when the finial .pdf is ready for download and printing to save some paper you'll probably be best to print half it then turn the pages around and print the other half so you get two strips per page then cut with scissors/craft knife etc and tape in order.

Hmmm - GPS or cheap?? - trouble with the route planner/roll chart is you sometimes need to know where you are which could be a bit puzzling if you've got into the riding groove and missed a turnoff or something - at least the GPS tells you where you are and where you should be going?

That's all part of it and that's also the problem I suffer when following another rider.
In keeping them in sight I don't always take the time to reset my trip counter or roll the cart on as required and so loose which number we are up to.
Then if they get a bit confused and want to check with me where we are at... well I have no Idea, I've just been following you and lost my place ages ago.

The one time i'v used route sheets was on the CCA Ride. Trouble was I had changed front sprocket on the DT230 (speedo pick-up is off the countershaft) & so trip meter calibration was up the wop.
Same things going to happen once I change Freewind front wheel from 19" to 21" - speedo drive is via front hub.
So it looks like I had better ask Santa for a GPS.

Using the roll chart is all part of the challenge. If you do use one you really need to make an effort to check the distance to the next turn and the name of the road or what the feature (gate, ford etc) is after you have made the previous turn and keep an eye on your trip meter. For most of the route the instructions are 5-30kms apart i.e. heaps of time, but around the towns they could be 100-500m apart just to keep you on your toes.

As a back up I'd suggest you take a print out of the topo maps on my web site so if all else fails you can pull them out of your pack to figure out which direction to head to get back to the route/nearest town etc. Cynna did pretty bloody well as a first time users with next to no instruction (I gave him some hints after he had already done a few hundred kms).

When I have finished revising the roll chart I'll put a hints/notes page at the front of the PDF which should help explain how to use it more.

Yea that would be bloody good, otherwise if Mrs Woodman gets me one for chrissy I will only have a couple of weeks to learn how to use it proper like.

How did the pre-run go? Just want to confirm that I (umopom) and VFRmuss are down for the two day - few questions - can you confirm accomodation for Sat16th yet? and do you know of any spaces in the Farlie area for the Friday15th? - also any indication on when you might have the rollchart finalised?

lol, the man's very busy and a long way off finalising stuff.
There's half a ride report floating around here somewhere and we didn't get the whole route checked yet.

Whoa - like TA said things are rather busy at home and work so I have to fit this in when I can. Grump pregnant wife doesnt help either!

The pre-run went well and we found that I need to do a bit more work on the roll chart. This will likely be something that I start working on next week.

Regarding accomodation, I'd suggest that people do start booking accomodation in Fairlie (15th/16th or 17th depening on which ride you do). There are two pubs in town, two or three motels and a camping ground. There are also pubs in Albury (sounds like this is closing though!) and Kimbell which are 20mins away from Fairlie

We went to check up on accomodation options for the two day riders saturday night but the place is only open by appointment only so I've got to ring them about what our options are soon. With regard to bookings for the Sat night I'll use the numbers on the two day ride calendar when I call the place but it will be up to the individuals to book. I'm not taking responsibility for handling cash etc. Also I plan on being close to finshed when you all arrive at the Sat night stop. I'm doing the one day Small Bore Challenge and am thinking of starting on the Friday evening and finishing Sat evening if all goes well.

Watch this space for more action over the next couple of weeks.
