Being scammed thru from my ad on Trade and Exchange

    I have my bike on T&E at the mo and within 2hrs of listing I get offered $100 more than I advertised it for. I attach the text of the e-mail;
    Hi,
I will like to know if the Ad is still available for sale and i will offer you $3,500.00 hope to read from you soon.
    Brelia.

The email was sent via a form on the Trade & Exchange website. The sender does not currently know your email address but will if you reply.

    Sender's IP: 202.154.130.162

So I respond as you do, ever hopeful that it is not a scam although I had a gut feeling, you know?
Hi Brelia, Yes the bike is still for sale. I had it running today and so I
know it is still in good order. Would you like me to send you some more
photo's? You are also able to come and view, but you realise the bike is in
    Whangarei? Cheers, Al.
    Then I get;
Hi,thanks for mailing back,i want you to send me the recent photos,
i am happy to read from you and i want you to know that am buying this
for Dad.......I would have prefer to come and inspect the Bike
and pay you in cash but i cant due to the nature of my work,I'm an
oceanist,i am at sea right now, and I am glad you accepted my offer.I
can only pay through paypal at the moment as i do not have access to
my bank account online, but i have it attached to my paypal account,
and this is why i insisted on using paypal to pay,all i will need is
your paypal email address to make the payment, and if you do not have
a paypal account yet,its pretty easy to set one up at www.paypal.com,i
will be expecting your email.I have a pick up agent that will come for
the pick up after payment has been sorted.
    Email me here.
    Brelia
Yeah so pretty obviously dodgy about here. I believe what they do is put the money in your Paypal account then ask you for the difference and then cancel the paypal? Anyone here shed some light or know a way around it?

Indeed. They make the payment, and take the bike. Then reverse the paypal.

them; No i want to make it a surprise for him and i know he will like it
me; Cool! He is very lucky to be getting this particular machine. By the way, where abouts is this machine going to in the country as I am a professional bike mover and have a modest fleet of vehicles. Am having trouble getting the photo's to upload as we had massive power cuts in the north today. Ta Al

Yeh but pay pal has a negotiation on disputes for 28 days then a hearing to decide if a refund is given so I cant see how they could be pulling the get money and goods trick but would suspect that they want your paypal details so as to send bung invoice maybe...

Hmm nasty thinking there but possibly the correct thinking, send you a letter by courier with the invoice and when you acknowledge receipt of package they have proof you took delivery of something.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.

me; Paypal won't let me have an account for 10 days, apparently thaty is their new policy to stop naive people from being scammed. Why do you want to pay for a bike as a surprise and then go thru all the heinous re-registration details in Oz? I don't get it?

Haven't heard back now for a while so I suspect they have given up!

IP is from Actrix, hardly a vessel at sea. (What the hell is an oceanist anyway?)

as you have figured out already it is a scam......
my daughter got something similar when selling her car through TM.....
If you would go on with it, you would get e-mails saying that money has been deposited in Paypal account, and it will be released to you as soon as you send them a money order...because , you see they accidently paid to much into paypal......
Opinions are like arseholes: Everybody has got one, but that doesn't mean you got to air it in public all the time....

Ha, but that's not how PayPal works. PayPal deducts the exact amount of the invoice from the payers credit card or bank account, and imediately transfers it to the Payee's account. They can't "accidentally" pay too much, and if they somehow do, maybe because of an incorrect invoice, then PayPal's dispute system comes into play. So if they ask for any refund it can only be after you have received the funds from PayPal, and then the refund is of course via PayPal.

The Scammer could end up being the one scammed.
