Now, I haven't scanned the site in detail, but the cursory glance I gave it sorta indicated that they are taking a bunch of (shock horror) DR 650's (chuckle). Not a katie, KLR or a beemer in sight.

    Bugger! hahahahahahahahahahaha.....................cough, choke, wheeze........hahaha.............

One of them is over on ADVrider looking for help with a pannier rack.

    Obviously no taste at all................

Bet they all get there with very little trouble too.

I have to go before I have a hernia from laughing.

Looks like one of the black DR's that were on earlier this year (with the DJ kit, motard guard, ims tank & screen), a new white one, and a DRZ250

    Quite likely.
Just giving the trolls a poke with a long stick - once too often by the looks of things.

Wot.....you mean you think there are people on(in?) here who think there would be BETTER bikes than a trusty DR to undertake this with?

    Shame on you

Yeah but by crikey are they ever gunna be in the shit unless they spend the price of the bike again on upgrading the tank, seat, engine, suspension, brakes etc. If it aint orange it's a lemon I say.

...actually if I didn't know my 640 so well I'd probably get a DR for that sort of trip too...

    Cheers

I've always thought they were a bit like a series 1 Land Rover - quite a few shortcomings but hard to kill.

Oh, and you only have to spend half the price of the bike again.................

Their BIG advantage for a trip like that one though, is that they would probably run just fine on vodka. I've put all sorts of interesting stuff in the tank on mine and it just doesn't seem to care.

That's being way too kind to Landrovers

The 640 actually has a 'Retard' setting (no, I don't have it on all the time) you disconnect a wire & it winds back the ignition timing a bit to deal with low octane fuel. So no probs for me with 91 in the outback, liquid cooling helps in hot & loaded situations too. The DR might do a bit better on Durkadurkastani vodka though...

A trip through central asia & some of the stans is definitely in my future, be a few years away yet but. I'll be following these guys with interest. Hopefully they can come up with a vid as cool as the African Odyssey guys. There have been a couple of cool stans/mongolia ride reports on advrider recently too.

    Cheers

    Very true dat!
Not convinced about the liquid cooling though.
When it's working, no argument. However, I was always nervous about depending on a pissy little fan that looks like it's from some battery toy and my tendency to fall off lots, had me worried about holing radiators.
