iPhone/iPod touch app for bikers – Greatest Road

Babysteps saw my posting on this new iPhone app on advrider.com and suggested I post here. Thanks for the heads-up, Babysteps.

Introducing GREATEST ROAD, an app for iPhone and iPod touch that helps motorcyclists find great places to ride based on recommendations and comments from other riders. For about the price of a bandana or a single, good map you get immediate, constantly updated access to the all of the roads and rider comments.

I’ve been working on the app for a few months, and it’s now available from the iTunes app store in most Apple-supported countries.

Some key elements:

Pop open the app, pick an area you’re interested in, and see a bunch of great roads right on the map. All of these roads have been added by other riders. Tap on any stretch to find out more.

See how other riders have rated a stretch overall and in terms of fun, twistiness, scenery and road surface. Look at a view of the stretch and see its length and surface type. Tap the map to zoom in on the stretch full screen.

Read Comments to find out about the road or discover timely hazards. Add your own Ratings or Comments.

I built this app because I wanted to see the good roads on a map. I didn’t want to have to pull from all the gpx files to *pick* a good road, and I was tired of getting directions I couldn’t follow because I hadn’t been in the area before.

I also wanted to get recommendations from other riders, including recent condition reports.

much in the way of NZ raods on this?

Not a lot, since we just started out and since all the roads are entered by individual bikers. Now that we have a bit of interest we'll get some more stretches together to put in. One of my partners is coming down to NZ in the next couple of months, so we have a vested in interest in both adding roads we can find and asking kindly for local bikers to start sharing roads this way.

I'd love to. I really would. But Apple only arranges for "promotion codes" for the US. I can't even give out codes to my fellow Canadians ;-(

Downloading it now, will definitely update it when I have time with some of my favourite roads! Such a great idea!!

I couldn't wait, I had to test it out - I did a very small Maraetai coast route just to see how it all went. This is a fantastic app and well worth the price, if it takes off in NZ, the piddly $10 will be paid back in great riding! Only downside was the 100char limit on the review, I was going to go on and mention how my local eatery at Maraetai's chef was a fellow biker but it cut me off, I can understand why though.

We're lengthening the comments to 400 characters in the next version, due out inside of 2 weeks. I agree - I want to find out about the food along the way too!
