Aye laddie! This office move is taking up so much of my time and energy... I'm likely to fall asleep riding home from SASS if I go!

I'll be back in a couple of weeks' time...

Know what you mean, mate! Brrrrr!

Mrs Caseye (yes, poor long-suffering wife of the notorious Mr Caseye here on KB - yes, I'm talking about you! ) suggested those cheap clear plastic gloves as a liner. They cut out the wind completely and reduce the chill... AND if it rains, your hands stay dry too.

I know where you work Tiggy me ol mate!
Ya know, those itty bitty bits of recycled plastic really do work. not that I'd ever consider showing any weakness in the face of extreme cold wind or climate changes.
Hell wifey puts her feet in em before loading her boots too, whats next, thermo undies???
Every day above ground is a good day!:

Ok, to stay warm you need to have the layers like this. Waterproof/wind proof on the outside, insulation material next to the skin. I wont work with the wind proof layer next to the skin. That layer just becomes cold and is just as bad.

So get some over gloves, proper winter gloves or hand guards on the bike. Hot grips will help but the gloves need to be right also.

Put yer gloves on the panini toaster before you head out - works a treat!

Seriously though, back in my Michigan days, a trick we used to use was the run our hands under the hot water for as long as we could stand it, then dry them and put our gloves on before going out. Really toasty for quite a while!

Mind you, that was for -5 to -20 degrees C, so I'm not sure if that needs to be done here...

Spokes - You mean like these:

I'm surprised there aren't more heated gloves for sale...

Had to ride up to Orewa first thing Tuesday for work. Nice frost here when I left at about 7:30 just before sun-up. Haven't fitted the heated grips to my new ride yet, so it was pretty cold. Sun was up by the time I hit the city and my fingers were just thawing out - with a bit of help from the clutch cover on the downhill sections. Then I crossed the bridge and man was it cold - and it just got colder as clouds covered the sun towards Orewa - fingers were so sore by the time I got there. Couple of minutes holding the clutch cover with gloves on and they were recovering nicely.

The waterproof overgloves are supposed to make quite a difference, but they are fairly restrictive. Probably worth it on a cold wet day though.

Yes, or something along those lines. A decent winter glove will do the same. Gortex would be the go.

Heated grips? There available everywhere. The new Oxford ones are cheap and very easy to fit. Much better than the old ones.

Essential info for the newbies to SASS:
South Auckland Street Skills or SASS

WHAT: Learning and improving Riding Skills
    WHEN: Tuesday Nights
WHERE: Meet at Z (ex-Shell) Service Station, Cnr Great South Road and Taka St, TAKANINI (the one with a Burger King)
WHO: Riders new and old, and anyone getting back into Motorcycling (must be legal & hold a motorcycle license).
Weather and venue permitting - Heavy Rain may mean that we are watching DVDs. Showers are OK, look on the thread for more up-to-date information.
Depending on the number of riders and their experience levels, a short ride may be included to practice further skills. If there are enough riders, some nights can be split into two different groups.

    Some nights may include:
Practicing essential skills and techniques in a quiet carpark
On-the-road practice which may see you doing up to a 1hr - 1 1/2hr ride.

    WHY:
    - Practice essential skills for staying alive on the road.
    - Practical help with your riding.
    - Fun times with fellow riders, with great stories and discussions.
    - Build friendships, solicit advice and pick-up riding tips.

MEET at Z station Takanini -----------> before 6.55pm

    START ride -----------------------------> 7pm

FINISH ride at ex-Manukau City Council car park for slow-speed safety exercises -----> usually 8pm-8.15pm
(next to the new Manukau train station & opp. police station)

SOCIAL time @ BRONCOS after car park exercises -----------> 8.45pm-ish

Cost: Nil, nada, zip, zero, nothing... Just your time and attention.

Details of what will be happening each week will be posted on this thread. So kick the tires and light the fires... Let's ride, aSASSins!
