    K&N filter + Yoshi RS-5 slip-on need a PC?

    My bike is a 08 CBR600RR. It has a Yoshi RS-5 slip-on only (stock headers and cat).

    It is due for a replacement air filter but the stock filters are on backorder from Japan and will take 2-4 weeks. They also cost a little bit more than an aftermarket K&N from bits4bikes.

    I'm not looking for performance gains, just a replacement I can have by tomorrow and be done with it. Will the bike run overly lean with just a K&N and Slip-on or will the EFI cope with these ok?

    I apologise up front if this question has been covered before it's just I can't find a definitive answer after searching.

    From my understanding a stock filter from a late model bike flows just as well as a replacement K&N, so you should be fine there. Have you tried asking at http://www.600rr.net/?

    Personally i'd stick with stock (and piece of mind) if you're not after any gains in performance. A matter of a few weeks won't be an issue but more importantly what's with not stocking an air filter in the country, that's pretty piss poor....

    Does the bike run OK without any obvious problems?
    We can run the bike up on the dyno and get some relevant mixture data.
    If there are any problem areas you can then make a decision as to whether or not they are worth fixing.
    There is a good chance a PC3 wont be a necessity, more of a nice to have.
    Considering a PC3 and a "decent" custom map will be around $1000 its definitely worth checking first to see if you actually need one.
    We could also run it up with the stock muffler and you will then know what the slipon is actually doing.

    I reckon! Perhaps they expect bikes to be binned before needing a new air filter or people replacing early are performance driven so always buy aftermarket.

    I went ahead and ordered a K&N just because the mech said "stock ex: Japan" could mean days or weeks and they’ve had no problems with them so far. Should arrive this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

    The bike runs perfectly now. I’ll see after the K&N change.
    I suspect the RS-5 makes more noise but not much else. Oh yeah, it's looks better as well.
    A Dyno tune would be ultimate peace of mind. I’ll wait to see how fast the wife recovers from the service bill.

    I got a SS/SS/carbon mainly because it was cheaper but also being an undertail I didn't want stray stones flicking into a carbon muffler. Also comes with a quiet insert which reduces the volume to a little louder than stock.

    Arrived on my doorstep a couple of days after ordering. No problem to install, fits up well.

    I suspect the RS-5 makes more noise but not much else. Oh yeah, it's looks better as well.

    If its running perfectly then fitting a Power Commander would just be a waste of money.
    Even fitting a K&N will make very little difference. They are designed as a replacement for stock without having to retune.

    As for your original question "do I need a power commander?"

    My 636 Ninja has essentially the same changes as yours - RS-5 slipon and K&N filter. But I went a little further and imported a PCIII at the same time, and had the bike dyno-tuned when I'd fitted them all.

    Best money I've spent on the bike yet. And I'm regretting having never done it for any of my previous bikes. Although that said, I wasn't so much looking for a increase in HP, but rather that nice fat torque gain right in the usable range.

    Don't be scared off by Triple Zee's "$1000" quote. He must charge like a wounded bull, because any redneck can land a PCIII from Ebay in NZ for all of $400, incl. shipping and GST (hell, even I managed it without screwing up). Add $300-400 (depends on how long it takes) for the dude who Henderson Yamaha bring in every week or two to do a dyno-day to do a dyno-tune, and then you'll be away and singing.

    Definitely noticable.

    You can also see it plainly on the graph - the first run on the dyno-sheet is the bike with the RS-5, K&N and PCIII fitted. The second is the final custom map.

    As I said in my other post, it was the best value for money that I have yet spent on parts or work for any of my motorbikes.

    I wonder what they would do if a RR customer books in for a service that requires air filter replacement...??? "certainly sir, your bike will be ready to be picked up in 3 months"

    I am leaning more and more to getting even day to day consumable parts from overseas as well as the big ticket items.

    I've had the K&N on for about a week. No PC3. K&N and Yoshi RS-5 Slip only. The throttle response seems to be a slightly sharper but I also *think*

    1) the exhaust is hotter. My left foot is definitely hotter. The temp gauge on my bike still shows normal temp though 78-80deg on the m-way?

    2) when I've been for a ride (say 40km) and stop at some lights the idle is RRRR RRRR RRRR RRRR when it used to be constant RRRRRRRRRRRRR

    Are these tell tale signs for anything bad (e.g. fuelling problem) or nothing much to do with anything?
