well congrats to you and mrs mudfart, I have a 7 seater cager, damn ugly thing, my twins just started school which is why I got my bike. Hold on to it if you can, it's way cheaper to run and you cna't take the children on it. Obviously.

Hey Scorp. Do you wanna buy my 250R for $6500. I think it has done a little over 2000km. It was serviced and WOF'd at Hamilton Motorcycle Centre in October of last year. Stock apart from Customskins paint protection (Thanks Simon), a Keiti carbon tank pad, and green wheel stripes to match the green fairing of course

I can get the exact mileage if you want. Just thought I'd throw it out there. Cheers
Oh but mine's a 2008. I'm told the only difference between 08 and 09 was that when they went to 09, they changed to a slightly cheaper set of tyres

It's not that far off the mark.
You make too many assumptions.
The bike is listed as 7k "ONO".
Everybody starts their asking price at the top end of what they think it's worth.
I paid 8k for a second hand, eighteen year old 250. I consider it a fair price from a licensed dealer for what it is. Slightly different scenario than that kwaka, but my point being there are plenty of bikes out there that look over priced to some one who doesn't know better.

Sounds great, but as a result of the research I've been doing I'm now more convinced than ever that the way to go is to spend less than 4K on a good sound workhorse learner bike.

Bikes like the Ninja and the Hyosung GT250 are obviously doing really well, good looking bikes that are pulling in the beginner buyers. But it looks like the majority are moving on to bigger things within a year.

So I figure, if I'm going to be shopping for a 600cc plus bike in a year, I'm better off spending under 4k on a 250 now, maybe a Virago, GSX or older VTR or Hornet, then saving the bigger bucks for the bike I really want in 12 months time.

Fair enuf. When I was looking at the market, I figured that whatever 250 I got, the resale would be thereabouts 12 months down the track so I'd get something I liked the look of (an hopefully that someone else will like the look of). I hope I'm right

oh you are a sensible one...love the 4 green boxes you now have. I too considered the cheaper learner bike for short term...decided to go brand new as I've never had new before, was my first and I'll likely keep it for at least 3 years if not more. Might even save it for when my boy wishes to get out on hte road. He is 8 and on his second little dirt bike. I'm only a little lady so I really don't think I'll want a bigger one and you are only allowed to travel at 100k so why go for more power...the little Ninja is a fine wee beast.

Less than four grand will get you a nearly new one (i.e. won't depreciate much more in 12 months)

Throw away the rubbish tyres they come with (if not already done) and replace.
