Biter is the term you are looking for. I had the same thing - oops, someone else has the same avatar. It was a bit of a surprise I guess.

Shrug, avatars are throwaway things to me anyway.. use them and chuck them out when I find a better one.

"read what Steve says. He's right."
"What Steve said pretty much summed it up."
"I did axactly as you said and it worked...!!"
    "Wow, Great advise there DB."

My Avatar got nicked within hours of me starting to use it. To be fair to the guy that stole it, he left a green bling behind. He's a scouser and they are know for these kind of things.

I didn't own the picture in the first place so no complaints.
    Yeah mashman eh?
I normally can scroll down a page and go by the avitar and know who has posted, but in your case, at times it will be mashman.
    SEE YOU IN TAUPO
I will be back in approximately 33.3564 picoseconds

But I noticed a few weeks later that another member was using the exact same picture for his avatar as well. Co-iniki-dink I thought? "FUCK NO THE BASTARD HAD JUST PLAIN COPIED ME!"
Two people having the same avatar could be annoying, but how do you know if they coppied you or simply used the same (freely available) picture from the internet.

I do get where you're coming from, I kinda think of this avatar and the other LOTR one I use as being "mine", but I don't have copyright rights on them so there's bugger all I can do if some noob comes along and decides to use one of them..... except cry quietly into my cornflakes.
    Exactly.

there was that rossi gif doing the rounds near end of last years motogp, bout 4 or 5 people had that I think, I would have jumped on the bandwagon but the rocking out cat one is too awesome to give up.

So in summary, if it was an avatar i'd made, yeh i'd be fucked off if someone took it, but one I'd found off the net, nah, its all good bro.

Think it was a muppet with Ronald McDonald's face on it. Search "wtf animated gif" on Google and you'll find it ;-)

Enough fun, changing back the avatar now.

Speaking of which, time to "make" a new GIF avatar....

Sure about that? All the wisdom I've ever heard says it was Keith Moon.
And to cock a snook at the devil, no-one's been game to use my avatar. Going on 5 years now.
If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhoea... does that mean that one enjoys it?.
