Hi guys, well it is offical, I am moving home for the summer from Melbourne and will be based at Lake Tekapo for 3 or so months so it would be rude not to dust off the riding boots and join in. Only issue is I don't have a bike in NZ at the moment so I am on the lookout for a reliable scooter.

Ryan, looking forward to catching up for this, it has been a while between drinks and I am yet to take part in the southern route. I now have a GPS so won't have to sea gull around others with a GPS at midnight on day one trying to find my way back to the start.

Hope to see you all there.

    Cheers

We came, we saw, and we had to turn around. Bit of a sneak preview of some tracks we were checking out for the dusty. We saw some of this

We did bit of this (hopefully lower once spring melt finished - might have to make this a challenge section otherwise. Will confirm later)

And we stayed here. This old railway station is not where it was built but about 70km away and 1000m higher. Bit of a crazy relocation story to go with it.

In summary not a very successful pre run but a heap of fun (though hard work). I'll organise an all comers ride for some time late Nov/early Dec to go check this area out properly.

Yep more than one sharp rock around. Definitely not somewhere to be heading into in crap weather. Riding is pretty slow so dark not so much of a problem. Didn't get to finish it off and didn't go in where I wanted too so will have to go back down and complete the roll chart and see how deep the river is closer to xmas.

Here's what I ended up with when I upgraded my bulb in '08.
Don't know if yours is a H4 style of bulb or what?

    2nd Pre-Run

I mentioned a while ago that I'd organise a 2nd pre run for the bits of the route that couldn't be accessed at Labour weekend due to lambing. Dates are the 11/12th of December starting in Waimate at around 10am (I'll confirm the start time when I work a couple of things out.

This will be doable on bigger bikes (I'll probably be on the 950 unless it sells before hand) but I'd riders need to be pretty comfortable on long steep loose rock climbs and reasonably serious river crossings. If we are unlucky there may even be some snow. Mitas E07 tyres will be OK cause mainly rock and bugger all dirt/mud. Fully on knobblies will probably get shredded.

Will be probably in motel/cabins in Ranfurly for Saturday so will need to carry some gear. Ride will finish in Fairlie where I'll be heading north back to Chch (hopefully Sunday afternoon).

I'll work on details a bit more over next week or so but if your interested put your request's to use brownee points in now.

    Cheers R

I'd take a light bike over a heavy bike no matter the tyres if you are crap at anything.
